🚨 New paper alert 🚨 Excited to share that we published the initial results of our MARES project (from Instituto de Telecomunicações funded by European Space Agency - ESA) in IEEE Transactions on Antennas and Propagation. Plastic marine litter is becoming a major environmental concern. Microwaves (MW) have potential for remote detection of floating macroplastics operating from Satellites or Airborne platforms, but very scarce and limited studies exist in the literature evaluating MW radar effectiveness for this purpose. We present first results of a systematic study on MW scattering of floating low-mass macroplastics at 2-20 GHz frequency band using radar techniques. Read more below!

Look: Sometimes transmitting packets over Low-Earth Orbit satellites is faster (in terms of latency) than user Silica Optical Fibers, as we show in our paper: Round Trip Times (RTTs): Comparing Terrestrial and LEO Satellite Networks presented in 27th Conference on Innovation in Clouds, Internet and Networks (ICIN 2024) The reason is that light travels at 300,000 km/s over the air and only at 200,000 km/s over silica fibers. "In 1988 PanAmSat (PAS) became the first private satellite operator to directly compete with INTELSAT and attempt to break its monopoly. The monopoly argument which contended it, was more nomically efficient to construct in the case of a single satellite network connecting different countries as opposed to building several competing satellite systems, gave rise to the formation of INTELSAT as a single monopoly provider of satellite services".

Four members of the Olin Satellite + Spectrum Technology & Policy Group (OSSTP) traveled to Las Vegas to present at yesterday's AIAA ASCEND 2023 conference. Amanda Chang '26, Angela Huang '26, and Celvi Lisy '23 presented on their research: "An Assessment of Technology Readiness Levels and Policy Implications of Orbit Transfer Solutions." Lilo Heinrich '23 (pictured fourth) presented on "The Current and Future State of Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) Fixed Satellite Service (FSS) Interference Regulation Metrics". Our first DEMO (Dual-frequency EISCAT Measurements for neutral interaction Observation) run at the EISCAT Scientific Association Tromso radar facility is live! We're pushing 1 MW through both Tromso radars (UHF and VHF) to tease out as much information as we can about the lower ionosphere and how the current solar energetic proton (SEP) event ionizes the upper atmosphere. Using both radars, scanning the same volume, will allow us to not only measure plasma in the ionosphere, but also the density of the lower thermosphere and mesosphere, regions are traditionally very hard to get measurements. The experiments will run throughout the day today, so it'll be a busy night reprocessing the data and starting to tease apart the event.
