As DC's leaders grapple with how to address high rates of chronic absenteeism among students, they should consider the role that out-of-school time programs can play in keeping students engaged with their schools. In my latest blog for DC Action, success stories and data demonstrate that District youth who attend an afterschool or summer program are more likely to attend school regularly than their peers who don’t participate. Giving more youth access to OST opportunities could help boost school attendance.

Thank you Ryllie Danylko for lifting up the work and impact of Horizons Greater Washington and other OST providers in the community. We know that our field plays a critical role in supporting youth and families and reversing the surging rates of chronic absenteeism by helping students build the academic skills and sense of belonging that will improve school attendance (and is backed up by data)

Great blog Ryllie Danylko! OST has a special place in my heart and data backs it up as a smart investment even when budgets are tight!
