JUST RELEASED: The Strategic Plan for Hawai‘i Wetlands 2024 We are delighted to announce the launch of the Pacific Birds’ Strategic Plan for Hawai‘i Wetlands 2024. The goal of the plan is to guide the effective protection, restoration, and management of wetlands for the benefit of Threatened and Endangered (T&E) waterbirds, migratory shorebirds and waterfowl, human communities, ecosystems, and climate resilience in Hawai‘i. The plan prioritizes wetland sites and conservation actions to improve habitats for waterbirds and people in Hawaiʻi. It includes an appendix with detailed site narratives on wetlands sites across the State. It will guide Pacific Birds’ work and help our partners to prioritize actions at both a State and a local level.

Many of us are best acquainted with our oceans from our perspective on the beach, where shorebirds, like the Wilson’s Plover, skitter about and Black Skimmers fly overhead, as illustrated here by Chris Vest. We can hardly imagine the vastness of the world's oceans, much less experience them as a seabird does, traveling thousands of miles over open water each year. But oceans are much more than the tiny slivers most of us experience at their edges. Oceans — from sandy beaches to deep-sea environments — are habitats. In this BCarbon white paper, Lalise Mason and I have proposed multiple living shoreline projects to protect the coastal marshes on the mid Texas coast that are the wintering grounds of the last wild flock of the endangered whooping cranes. These marshes are threatened by sea level rise which will drown and erode these marshes if we don’t act, and we need creative solutions to protect this land and ensure the future of whooping cranes. We believe that the construction of living shorelines is the key to protecting these marshes from erosion and by capturing sediment more efficiently. The proposal is to issue carbon credits for protecting the carbon stored in these marsh sediments and for the continued annual drawdown of carbon dioxide into the marsh. To this end, BCarbon has developed a carbon credit protocol for issuing credits for protecting coastal wetlands. What we need now is for buyers to step up and say they are interested in purchasing these carbon credits. The project developers are ready when the buyers are ready. And the long-term fate of the whoopers is a stake.  

Was honoured to meet with Tony Maas, Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of the Prime Minister, to discuss Canada's 2030 National Biodiversity Strategy and the proposed Nature Accountability Act. It's crucial that this Strategy has legal-teeth, holds up Indigenous rights and titles, and is adequately funded. Perhaps we can redirect subsidies from nature-harming industries (looking at you old growth and clear-cut logging) to fund this Strategy over the long-term. We also identified a low-hanging fruit win for the federal government: introduce a mandatory 1,000-metre vessel buffer for recreational and commercial whale-watching vessels around endangered Southern Resident killer whales. This would match the protections provided by Washington State after the passing of their Senate Bill 5371, which will come into effect in 2025. #science #policy #biodiversity
