9moAfter 15 years in NM, I think it's even more important to bring opportunity to regional hispanic economies. NM bounces along the bottom of socioeconomic outcomes in the U.S. in part due to toxic political policies that exploits the community and traps them in government dependencies, and in part due to a bias in business and investment. As long as a business provides strong governance, and protects against the negative influence in the state government culture, the overall advantages in NM for many companies far outweigh the disadvantages. For example, the terrible NM gross receipts tax doesn't apply to exports, and since the NM population is relatively small, with no F500 companies based here, many businesses don't have customers in NM -- all exports. Low natural risks, affordable, some locations have low crime, and good universities, plus it's not difficult to recruit people to live in NM today. Climate is very good, outdoor rec is exceptional - ABQ and SF are closer to Sam Juan Mts in Co than Denver or Phoenix, art and food are legendary. What has bothered me most is that if we had more business investment in NM, I think it would be relatively easy to improve the business environment and socioeconomic outcomes.
