It was great to attend the ESG in Dairy Summit by Agri Insider in the Midlands Park Hotel yesterday where industry leaders and experts discussed the challenges and opportunities for the dairy sector. There was a lot to digest from the event but some of my takeaway messages were: *Collaboration is key: The dairy industry's approach to sustainability is fragmented, with different companies implementing various strategies. There needs to be a unified approach in bringing together farmers, processors and industry stakeholders across the value chain to tackle ESG challenges. *Communication & storytelling: There is a need for more effective communication and storytelling to convey the dairy industry's sustainability efforts to consumers and all stakeholders. *Focus on facts: Emphasising scientific truth and factual information is essential in defending the industry's sustainability claims. The truth, backed by solid research and data, should be the foundation of the industry's communication efforts. *Consumer and market trends: There's a growing demand for transparency and sustainability in the dairy supply chain, which influences how companies approach their ESG strategies. *Technology: The sector must continue to innovate and adapt by leveraging new technologies. From using AI for data driven decision making to planning more efficient transport strategies. *Economic and environmental balance: Finding a balance between maintaining economic viability and meeting environmental sustainability goals remains a key challenge. *Developing a biomethane industry: The agricultural sector, especially dairy co-ops, have a role to play in developing a biomethane sector in Ireland, given the optimal mix of grass and slurry for AD processes. *Nutrient value of dairy: Nutrient density should be included when assessing carbon footprint. *Carbon leakage: It’s real and it makes no sense to reduce dairy production in Ireland only to ramp up production in other less sustainable regions. #ESG #Dairy #Sustainability
