It goes without saying that the past academic year was a difficult one for Jewish college students. The new issue of "Sources: A Journal of Jewish Ideas" features Hillel professionals, college students, and professors who reflect on the challenges and opportunities for Jewish students and academics on campus at this moment in time. Perhaps we have the answer here. As we learnt in All The President’s Men, the rule for uncovering political corruption is “Follow the money”. Is Campus Rage Fueled by Middle Eastern Money? - According to a new report, at least 200 American colleges and universities illegally withheld information on approximately $13 billion in undisclosed contributions from foreign regimes. By Bari Weiss https://lnkd.in/eQgmZSBN For the full report by the Network Contagion Research Institute see; "THE CORRUPTION OF THE AMERICAN MIND: HOW CONCEALED FOREIGN FUNDING OF U.S. HIGHER EDUCATION PREDICTS EROSION OF DEMOCRATIC VALUES AND ANTISEMITIC INCIDENTS ON CAMPUS https://lnkd.in/e_uU8vBR
Jewish students are being targeted and defamed solely for being Jewish, all this under the pretext of progressive values and freedom of speech. In some small circles, this has been a reality for years, but the current rampant wave of antisemitism on campuses has significantly increased since October 7th and it must serve as a warning sign for us all. As a mother to a university student in the United States and a long-time professional in the American Jewish community, I am familiar with this frightening reality. I invite you to read the article I wrote on the subject which was published on ynet today: https://lnkd.in/d3WNd-PY

Time has long passed for the NY National Guard and the CT National Guard to take control of the Columbia and Yale campuses. Americans, regardless of their race or religion should expect their chosen college campus to be a safe place to learn and live. It is now clear that, like the Biden Administration, fear of upsetting the Jew Hating pro-Hamas, pro-Palestinian demonstrators, the Columbia and Yale administrators are more concerned about ruffling the “feathers” of aggressive, insulting, and threatening pro-terrorists than securing their campuses. It is clear that the liberal mayors and governors who have oversight for the location of these schools have no intention of permanently locking down these campuses from violent extremists.
As Jewish students face this onslaught of antisemitism, they ought to be able to rely on institutional leaders for support. Every CEO and board member from various Jewish legacy groups should be out there on these campuses and backing our students, who are outnumbered and frightened. The time for sending letters expressing “concern” about the unfolding situation has long passed. This was the scene at Yale last night. https://lnkd.in/e8E3xH6U

Alongside 150 colleagues from throughout the University of California system, including many major figures in Middle East Studies: Stacy Fahrenthold, Heghnar Watenpaugh, Patricia Morton, Sholeh Quinn; those engaged in cutting-edge Holocaust research: UCLA's Michael Rothberg, and leading and rising historians and area studies specialists: Marian Schlotterbeck and Archana Venkatesan, we sent a letter to UC President Michael Drake calling on him to rescind his plan to spend millions of dollars imposing “viewpoint neutral history of the #MiddleEast ” on our campuses and students. We explain that if the UC administration determines “how and what we teach” in our field, it will “set a chilling precedent” affecting the teaching of all topics of public concern and critical debate like climate change, histories of racism, #genocide, and mass atrocity. We note that his statements question the academic integrity of “scholars already engaged in the historical study and teaching of the Middle East,” and remind him that “the sole responsibility for maintaining the quality of our universities’ academic programs” rests with the faculty. We ask him to “to reaffirm the independence and integrity of UC faculty to educate without outside interference; to rescind the call for “viewpoint-neutral history” that directly undermines the prerogative and ability of UC faculty to educate students.” And we ask him to reaffirm his commitment to protecting academic freedom and the First Amendment right to free speech for students, faculty and staff around the war in Gaza, Israel/Palestine and any other issue of public concern and debate. #AcademicFreedom #history

Since The United Methodist Church General Conference Worldwide Charlotte May 2024 and the separation of another part of the Methodist Churches of their own General Governance, The United Methodist Church has changed their education of universities and colleges of divinity education to the new school showcase and places for new school inclusions. A process where education is coordinated with The United Methodist Churches. Well done. All my life in the Christian Church. Peace to religions. https://lnkd.in/dxuN9mSa

“Dear President Shafik, We write as Jewish faculty of Columbia and Barnard in anticipation of your appearance before the House Committee on Education and the Workforce on April 17, where you are expected to answer questions about antisemitism on campus. Based on the committee’s previous hearings, we are gravely concerned about the false narratives that frame these proceedings to entrap witnesses. We urge you, as the University president, to defend our shared commitment to universities as sites of learning, critical thinking, and knowledge production against this new McCarthyism. Rather than being concerned with the safety and well-being of Jewish students on campuses, the committee is leveraging antisemitism in a wider effort to caricature and demonize universities as hotbeds of “woke indoctrination.” Its opportunistic use of antisemitism in a moment of crisis is expanding and strengthening longstanding efforts to undermine educational institutions. After launching attacks on public universities from Florida to South Dakota, this campaign has opened a new front against private institutions.”
