In 2017, I attended a presentation on innovation at the Sudanese Engineering Council (SEC) given by Dr. Moahmed Elhadi, who introduced me and the audience to systematic approaches for innovation, including a quick overview of the #Triz-Matrix. Examples of innovations created using systematic methodologies in business and engineering were provided. During those days, I was working on the River Nile Buses project's passenger boat ramp tilt issue. It was a good opportunity for me to apply what I had learnt during the presentation. The solution was designed to be constructed using available resources, with no ability to import more parts or make significant changes to the ramp and stacked pontoon. By using some of the methods offered, I was able to construct my first iteration of the problem solution, as I modified the ramp from having a rotating support end and a free end to having two ends that allow for restricted linear motion. The first part of the video depicts the problem, in which the ramp tilts at a dangerous and unpleasant degree for passengers. The second part of the video depicts the first iteration of the solution, in which I did the following: - Creating a sloping river bank protection which includes stairs. - Installing tracks along the riverbank and the sides of the stairs. - Adding several wheels to the ramp's sides. - Adding additional track to the piled pontoon. How does it work? Wheels travel at an angle through tracks on land and horizontally through tracks on the piled pontoon. When water levels rise, the pontoon pushes the ramp higher, while the wheels allow the ramp to glide and maintain a horizontal position. The same thing happens as the water levels drop, gravity pulls the structure down, and the wheels slide, keeping the ramp horizontal. The good thing about this solution it works automatically with the change of water level without the need of additional mechanical or electrical systems or additional supervision (Utilizing Nature). One drawback of this version is that at low water levels, the ramp may extend outside the pontoon, posing a safety risk to passengers.
