Recently spent some incredibly rewarding time volunteering at the Rixensart Asylum Seekers Centre in Belgium! For me, being a responsible citizen goes beyond rhetoric; it is about extending a genuine helping hand to those seeking refuge and embodying the essence of social responsibility. Volunteering is not just about making a difference; it is about the real, tangible impact you can have on the well-being of asylum seekers. It is a chance to contribute to a more inclusive and compassionate society, and the cultural exchange that comes with it breaks down barriers, promoting unity in our global village. On a personal level, this experience has been transformative. Stepping out of my comfort zone, developing empathy, acquiring new skills – it's a journey of growth that goes beyond the volunteer hours. It is about evolving as an individual and realizing the power we hold to make positive change. For me, volunteering is not just about giving back; it is about building connections and community. It is about strengthening the fabric of society, creating bonds that transcend cultural, linguistic, and social differences. Did you know that last week was National Volunteer Week? Neither did I! But now that I do, I want to give an anonymous shout out to all of the amazing volunteers and charitable organisations that I have had the pleasure to work with over the past-many years. Your mahi matters to me. And while I'm here - a few insights I can share from some of this work: 1 - Volunteers don't do it for the recognition. But, they do want to feel appreciated 2 - There is no single way to show appreciation for your volunteers in a way that will universally "land well". Sadly, misjudged expressions of appreciation sometimes do more harm than good 3 - The best way to get it right, is to understand your volunteers deeply, and have a well-stocked toolkit that your volunteer-managers can dig into to show authentic and well-considered appreciation on a case-by-case basis PM me if you want to know more about the research to support these insights, or how you can check whether the frameworks and approaches you have in place will land well with your volunteers. #NVW2024 #TheBigShoutOut

Still thinking about New Year’s resolutions? Put volunteering high on your list as according to Mayo Clinic, it improves physical and mental health and provides a sense of purpose. Last year, ZEN team members, MAC Trade Services and Department for Energy and Mining, South Australia experienced such feelings after volunteering at Tauondi Aboriginal College on Kaurna Country. Tauondi is one of the oldest Aboriginal community-controlled organisations in South Australia and provides critical education and social services. We plan to do more volunteering in 2024 as social responsibility is part of a 1.5°C world.
