Kudos MISO on your draft $20 billion HVDC transmission plan…but reconductoring with advanced conductors would be faster and cheaper for much of the plan. The need for the transmission is undeniable. We would be well served by a HVDC grid network throughout the US. It would be great if construction started tomorrow. But new transmission lines take 10-20 years and we need more transmission capacity now…particularly between regions as demonstrated by The Brattle Group. The Berkeley Haas Energy Institute has found replacing existing transmission lines with advanced conductors-no tower modifications needed-is the fastest and cheapest way to increase transmission capacity. I recommend that MISO consider the role reconductoring with advanced conductors can have in accelerating and reducing the cost of its Tranche 2 plan.

How does the US handle an 80% increase in load growth while engaged in the energy transition?
