$176B plan unveiled to rebuild Northeast rail corridor: The Northeast Corridor Commission was announced on November 16th, outlining a 15-year plan to rebuild the Boston-New York City- Washington, D.C., rail line. This plan is a revised version of the original from 2021, which detailed the repairs needed, service goals and the necessary infrastructure. The estimated inflation-adjusted cost is now $176 billion year-of-expenditure dollars. The NEC carries the commuter trains of transit agencies that serves Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia. This means that the NEC will handle 60% more commuter trains and 50% more Amtrak trains between Boston and New York City. Improvements will accommodate 51 million more travellers each year, shifting 38 million car trips and 600,000 short-haul plane trips to rail. 🚄 Revamping the Connecticut River Bridge: A $1.3 Billion Game-Changer for Amtrak and Northeast Corridor Rail Amtrak has initiated a transformative project by commissioning O&G Industries, Inc., and Tutor Perini to replace the aging Connecticut River Bridge, a key link between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, Conn. This $1.3-billion endeavor, scheduled to start later this year, promises enhanced reliability and capacity for intercity, commuter, and freight services in the Northeast Corridor. Key highlights of the project: - New Two-Track Crossing: Located just south of the existing bridge, featuring a modern movable span. - Increased Speed and Clearance: The new structure will support train speeds up to 70 mph (a 55% increase) and provide an additional 6 ft of vertical clearance for maritime traffic. - Extended Service Life: Designed to last 150 years. The project is backed by an $826.64-million FRA grant and additional funding from Amtrak and the State of Connecticut. Hardesty & Hanover led the design, with AECOM as the construction manager.
