This club has given me so much, from amazing friendships to a much-needed outlet during Covid. I figured it was time to give back. Seriously, the more you get on stage, the more you learn. People think public speaking skills are something you're born with, but Toastmasters proves otherwise. Picture this: our special District Conference, packed with international guests, and everyone thinks I'm the 'dedicated guest greeter at the door'. Talk about a case of mistaken identity! We all had a good laugh about it, especially when they realized I was actually the president. This month marks my first full year as a member of Toastmasters - and it has been an incredible year! Toastmasters (specifically Raleigh Club 843) has created safe space for intentional growth that I don't take for granted.   The community my club has fostered, welcomes members to try new speaking techniques, to receive feedback and most importantly, to make mistakes in an encouraging environment. As a former speech and debate kid, I've always have had a passion for public speaking, and toastmasters has given me the opportunity to practice and hone in on the skill.   Last month, I had the honor of representing my Area and competing in the Division E Tournament, securing 2nd place in Table Topics (Impromptu Speaking). I'm looking forward to participating in future competitions!   If you've ever considered going to Toastmasters, I recommend the following:   1. Visit multiple clubs as a guest: Each group has a different environment and culture (in-person v. virtual, large v. small, experienced v. novice, etc.). Find a group that best suits your needs. 2. Be patient with yourself: People start public speaking at different stages in their journey. There is no right or wrong experience level to join. 3. Go in open-minded: Since Toastmasters is comprised of individuals of all ages, races, industries, etc., being open to the diverse perspectives and experiences in the room can lead to new insights, deeper understanding, and meaningful connections. Earlier this month I had the pleasure of attending Toastmasters District 42 conference. The connections made and lessons learned were unforgettable. I truly believe everyone can benefit from this organization. A common misconception about Toastmasters is that it is just public speaking. Speaking is a major part of the program, but there is so much more to learn. A few unexpected skills I've picked up from the program are: 1. How to think on the spot 2. How to run an effective and timely meeting 3. How to give effective feedback Toastmasters and my club, Civil Speakers, has helped me in my career, personal life, and in expanding my creativity. On the topic of creativity, I will end this post with a poem written by my fellow Toastmaster, Nick Bobetsis, that explains Toastmasters geography: Where in the world is Civil Speakers Regina? Areas, Divisions, Districts and Regions are all. Within these Civil Speakers club stands tall. We are in Area 24, that is key. Area 24 is found in Division B. B24 is the combined Area name. Inside which, our club achieves fame. Division B belongs to District 42. D42 is within Region 4, that is true.

The world 🌍 has changed a whole lot in 100 years, including the exciting ability to meet virtually and #connectfromanywhere Communication and Leadership skills are still important. Delighted to have retained the Toastmasters District 70 Evaluation trophy for 2023-2024 (not so delighted about my droopy tie). I am under no illusion that my success was largely down to the network of supportive coaches, mentors and friends I have been fortunate enough to learn from. A huge thank you to each of you (honourable mention to Yun Hou CA - everyone needs someone like you)! I spent part of 2023 volunteering at a local corporate business, helping a group of architects overcome their own fears of public speaking and here’s what I have learnt: 1. Public speaking isn’t like riding a bike unfortunately. It’s more like going to the gym. It requires dedication and consistency - that is the difficult part. Really, who wants to consistently be uncomfortable? (People that put personal growth ahead of discomfort is the answer). 2. We really do have the ability to reframe how we look at things. I’ve seen first hand people turn crippling nerves into positive energy and enthusiasm on stage. 3. Finding a supportive environment to practise in is imperative - you’d rather freeze in a room full of people who want you to succeed than say, at a client conference. 4. You can learn just as much by watching and analysing other people and their delivery. Audience member or speaker - both roles are equally valuable learning opportunities. After speech projects on various topics at Toastmasters Paderborn Die Klartexter, such as a Q&A session and the question of why a speech is a work of art, Level 5 is there. At Toastmasters you are constantly giving speeches, giving feedback and training your own ability to give a speech or pitch spontaneously, even on topics for which you are not prepared. Ever talked about a black hole? Researching and presenting a topic you are not familiar with is another example what you can train with Toastmasters International.
