When thinking about how to make moments for movement, don't discount those easy wins - dancing in the kitchen to your favourite song, getting off the bus a stop earlier or parking at the far end of the car park... or even just a couple of minutes of stretching while you're waiting for the kettle to boil! Share your ideas for easy wins in the comments! #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek2024 #MakeMomentsForMovement #MomentsForMovement #MHAW #MentalHealthAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #UniMentalHealth #StudentMentalHealth

How are my dreams of a dance career tied to sponsorship? Back in the day, the only thing I talked about, dreamed about and did on a daily basis was dance. I thought for sure I would be a big star one day. So when I was asked to represent my high school in a ballet trio, I was beyond excited. Cut to the realization that flying to Japan is EXPENSIVE! So what is a gal to do? Ask for sponsors!!! So does this make me an international performer? I need to update my resumé! #dance #japan #sponsorship #backstory

Every community around Australia has a dance school - sometimes several! And they play a huge role for kids and families. They are also the first step in the talent pipeline for companies like The Australian Ballet - but the pathway from first moves to professional career has many twists and turns. It’s rare that an industry comes together to look at participation pathways and we were honoured to work with the ballet sector in grappling with the long tail of the pandemic and how it has worsened some barriers to dance. Right across the ballet world, from The Australian Ballet and The Australian Ballet School, through to the 4,000 dance schools and millions of students across Australia, interest is growing in seeing greater diversity and accessibility in ballet. More boys in dance schools, more pathways into the industry, more cultural safety and more diversity on our stages. Ballet is such a wonderful artform, straddling culture and sport, and providing beauty, athleticism and emotional expression to so many. We have been honoured to hear the stories of dancers, dance teachers, studio owners and professional organisations making a contribution to this artform. This Fact Sheet doesn't have all the answers but I hope publishing these perspectives and datapoints will help complement the work of those with lived experience of the barriers, and increase the momentum of changes already underway. As Andrew Murphy, Artistic Teacher at the Australian Ballet School said so eloquently: 'It's a really important time in the ballet world to have an honest conversation about this, and look at the profession and try to make a difference'. If you have something to say about participation pathways for Australian dancers, please comment below or send us an email. A big thank you to everyone who participated in this project - and to the commissioning organisations. I would also like to share my appreciation for the Patternmakers team members who conducted the research and prepared this Fact Sheet, Caitlin McNaughton, Melanie Raveendran and Mia Skeffington. Thanks to you all, we have measures of ballet pathways and diversity, against which future progress can be tracked. #ballet #talentpipeline #pathways #participation #diversity #FirstNations #culturaldiversity #gender #research
What do dance school enrolments tell us about the future of dance in Australia? In 2023, we were commissioned by The Australian Ballet (TAB) and The Australian Ballet School (ABS) to conduct research into participation pathways for Australian dancers. The goal was to understand how the pandemic had affected enrolments, and the level of diversity in the talent pipeline for professional dance. 560 stakeholders, including dance teachers, studio owners, students and parents of students, participated in this project, and many expressed support for change in the dance industry. Swipe through for the key insights, and get the full story in our Fact Sheet, including statistics around enrolment, diversity of participation, and areas of opportunity within the dance sector. Download the Fact Sheet: https://lnkd.in/ggKSJGvJ Thank you to The Australian Ballet and The Australian Ballet School for making this project possible, as well as each of the participants in this research, who took the time to contribute to this study, and the organisations involved. We'd also like to acknowledge research team members Caitlin McNaughton, Mia Skeffington and Melanie Raveendran for their roles in the project. #ballet #dance
