While having an “Employee of the Month” award may sound a good thing to increase engagement… is it NOT ! To be fair, it does work well for the first 2-3 months. It is new. People are excited. They usually see quite well why those first 2-3 people were picked (they were the most obvious ones that everyone already knows about). And everyone becomes confident that one day, they will be finally seen and recognised too! And that's when everything starts to go south... After a while it does not seem very clear at all how to choose the right person anymore and what the rationale is. You realise that you cannot reward the same people or the same departments all the time, so you start to search for what will LOOK fair as opposed to what IS fair. Everyone is losing faith in the system, employees start to denigrate the chosen ones (why them and not me!) and see favouritism everywhere. What should we do then? 🔑 Recognition has to be SPONTANEOUS, TIMELY and GENUINE! Instead of monthly rewards, look into spontaneous recognition systems such as spot bonuses or peer bonuses. These allow managers or peers to recognise great achievements, behaviours or efforts anytime! And recognitions do not even have to be monetary! Do you include Agency Associates and Resident Contractors when you have Company-sponsored events and meetings? Well, yes, yes we do, why would we not want to include them? I was surprised to hear from some other companies recently that they do not extend their events, recognition programs, meetings to their agency associates or even their resident contractors. This creates a divide whether one wants to recognize or admit to it. Treating associates differently causes mistrust and diminishes loyalty and value. At VF Outdoor, EVERY agency associate, EVERY Resident Contractor participates in all of our plant meetings, plant trainings, Birthday Recognition program, New Hire/ New Associate Announcements, productivity recognition, company-sponsored activities, projects and meal events. Last week I spent time facilitating Business Storytelling sessions for our Campus Lateral Hires at Sterling Holiday Resorts Limited and here are the highlights of the topic that stood out for me >> a. Evoking Emotion and Driving Action Effective business stories are not just data-driven presentations, but narratives that connect with the audience on an emotional level to drive action and change. The goal is to create a compelling story that sticks in the minds of listeners long after it's told. By tailoring stories to the motivations, goals, and challenges of the sales team, the stories become more impactful and effective at inspiring them to sell more successfully. b. Demonstrating Value and Building Trust (for the customers) Well-crafted sales success stories can demonstrate the value of a product or service, build trust with potential customers, and provide a compelling reason to buy. The stories should focus on identifying the customer's needs and pain points, and showcase how the solution has helped others achieve measurable results. c. Coaching and Developing the Sales Team (and customers, therefore) Sharing sales success stories with the team can boost morale, motivation, and confidence, giving sales reps the inspiration they need to keep pushing forward, even during tough sales cycles. The stories provide practical examples that reps can learn from and apply in their own sales conversations. d. Aligning the Team and Communicating the Vision Impactful business stories can also be used to align the sales team around a common vision, values, and strategic objectives. By tying the stories to the broader goals of the organization, leaders can effectively communicate the "why" behind the team's efforts. Happy National Careers Week! 🌟 Reflecting back to when I was just 18, searching for a part-time job to make ends meet, I never imagined I'd still be with the same company 13 years down the line! My journey with Mitchells and Butlers kicked off at a local Ember Inns, where I vividly recall clumsily pouring my first pint of Stella – more foam than beer! Who would've guessed that years later, I'd be the one coaching teams on the art of the perfect pour? 😄🍺 As I settled into the groove after a month or two, I found myself falling in love with the hospitality industry. When my General Manager transitioned to Vintage Inns, I eagerly followed suit, commencing my progression from team member to Assistant Manager while simultaneously taking on the role of district trainer for my area. Then came a pivotal moment when I stumbled upon a job opening for an Openings Team Trainer. I jumped at the opportunity, went through the interview process, and felt incredibly fortunate to land the role! Openings training became my passion – the thrill of guiding different teams week after week, immersing myself in lots of different brands. After a couple of years, I felt primed for the next phase of my journey and secured a secondment in a Training Partner role, spanning across two divisions. This then became permanent and allowed me to delve deeper into content creation and division-specific intricacies. Fast forward to today, and I'm loving my role as a Recruitment Manager! While this role presents fresh challenges from my prior training roles, I relish the daily interactions with lots of different individuals and diving into PBOs. I count myself incredibly lucky to have crossed paths with amazing colleagues and supportive managers along the way. Hospitality truly offers a myriad of career paths, and I'm grateful for the twists and turns of my journey! For those uncertain about their career direction (at any stage of life!), here's why I believe the hospitality industry is an exceptional choice: ✅ Diverse career pathways – whether that’s in Operations, Marketing, HR, Finance, Property… the list goes on.
