Happy World Autism Day! Neurodivergent people make the world so much richer. I am grateful for every autistic person in my life, who have taught me so much and smash stereotypes every day. There are many pervasive myths and stereotypes about autism, which leads to ongoing stigma, negative bias and discrimination. There is no one way to be autistic of course, but the autistic people I know are passionate advocates for social justice, they are deeply empathetic, they are great friends and colleagues, and (just like everyone else!) they are so diverse in their opinions, preferences, strengths, identities and interests. Something I’ve learned about recently is autistic joy, which was described by lived experience trainers at Sunny Spectrum. It was described as a full body experience of intense and overwhelming joy! Highlighting the strengths of and affirming autistic people is so important to combat the negative stereotypes which are sadly still so pervasive. This World Autism Day, and every day, I want every autistic person to be affirmed and valued, so they can truly thrive. #WorldAutismDay

Holly, love this and thank you for sharing. And believe it or not, but you featured in my autism screening process! I realised after the last ASHM conference that I'd introduced myself to you as if we hadn't met at least 3-4 times before over the past 5-10 years, lol. It was just one data point among many — having trouble connecting faces with names and personal memories is more common among autistic folks. You were absolutely lovely about it and from an autistic perspective that made the whole experience funny rather than embarrassing or stressful. Screening is an intense experience so it was nice having a story to share that ended on a happy note.
