Happy World Autism Day! Neurodivergent people make the world so much richer. I am grateful for every autistic person in my life, who have taught me so much and smash stereotypes every day. There are many pervasive myths and stereotypes about autism, which leads to ongoing stigma, negative bias and discrimination. There is no one way to be autistic of course, but the autistic people I know are passionate advocates for social justice, they are deeply empathetic, they are great friends and colleagues, and (just like everyone else!) they are so diverse in their opinions, preferences, strengths, identities and interests. Something I’ve learned about recently is autistic joy, which was described by lived experience trainers at Sunny Spectrum. It was described as a full body experience of intense and overwhelming joy! Highlighting the strengths of and affirming autistic people is so important to combat the negative stereotypes which are sadly still so pervasive. This World Autism Day, and every day, I want every autistic person to be affirmed and valued, so they can truly thrive. #WorldAutismDay

Here are some suggestions from Autism Spectrum Australia (Aspect) about what you might say if you find out someone is Autistic... “What things are you passionate about?” “Is there something I can do to make you feel more comfortable?” “What can I do to support you?” ”You do you.” “How would you like to communicate?” Check out the article below for some more fabulous insights. ⤵ #WAUD2024 #UnderstandingAutism #AutismAwareness #Autism #AuADHD
