Diversify before it's too late. Last year's Hollywood strikes, and reduced appetite from the streamers for commissioning new film and TV content, led many VFX studios to pursue new revenue streams. Its the right move for Universal to buy it. Gives them DC, Dune, Game of Thrones, LoTR, and Potter (already in the parks). The animation portfolio has a lot to work with – Looney Toons, Scooby Doo, Hanna Barbara, Cartoon Network. With Illumination and Dreamworks, WB-Universal would be an animation powerhouse that rivals Disney. Max + Peacock makes MaxCock (teehee) a must-have streaming service that probably gets Netflix / Disney+ levels of adoption. Between Blumhouse and Warners they would corner the market on horror adding Friday the 13th, Conjuring, It, Nightmare on Elm Street, and more to the portfolio. And it gives them a gaming division that they've always wanted along with one of the few multi-decade games franchises – Mortal Kombat – which could be much larger than a fighting game. Basically, its a win on streaming, gaming, IP, animation, horror, superheros, parks, merchanise, etc etc. Questions are – price, whether they have to buy Discovery to get it, and whether the FTC will allow the merger.

Such a shame for the 162(?!?) staff now out of a job plus however many freelancers they had. It's pretty galling to blame it on high labour costs though - implying that the staff are paid more than they deserve? I think the bigger issue is that budgets have reduced across the board but clients still want the same quantity and quality of work. Most artists and animators are happy to go above and beyond (so that they are seen to be hard workers and stay employed) but that's not financially viable. The recent turndown in work has been so tough to navigate for almost every single studio/production company/post house. To blame it on paying their highly skilled and hard-working staff is a bit tone-deaf when ultimately it's down to bad luck and mismanagement from the directors.
