This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek we want to highlight the importance of supporting the mental health needs of children in kinship care. 💛 Our research shows that children living in #KinshipCare - being raised by a relative or family friend because a parent can't - have often experienced trauma and loss. As a result, they are more likely to have higher levels of mental health needs than children in the general population. We know that the unmet demand for mental health support for children growing up in kinship care is significant. Even where this type of support is provided, #KinshipFamilies are struggling to access it. Kinship's 'Cost of Loving' report revealed that nearly two thirds of #KinshipCarers said accessing mental health support for their children was difficult or very difficult. With MHL, people learn how to support their own mental health as well as the mental health of those in their care. The new guide developed by ESF is a resource supported by the Victorian Government for families of Victorian emergency service volunteers to help them understand how they can best support the wellbeing of their ES family member so they can do their important community work. Children's Commissioner Dame Rachel de Souza compared the current #children mental health figures to a tsunami. In the latest report published last week, it shows that almost one million children and young people in England were referred to #mentalhealth services last year - that’s 8% of children in England. 🤯 The commissioner's report also finds: 👉🏻 270,300 children and young people are still waiting for mental health support after being referred in 2022-23. 👉🏻 372,800 had their referral closed before accessing #support. 👉🏻 Almost 40,000 children waited more than two years for mental health treatment. 👉🏻 31,000 children reached a point of mental health crisis last year. We need fresh, long-term thinking when it comes to children’s mental and emotional health and #wellbeing. Much of this work must be done upstream, creating an environment and a world – both online and offline – where children grow up feeling happy, safe and supported. This means every child feels loved and nurtured, lives free from poverty, and is able to focus on learning.
