How does your team work together?

URW recently released the first European impact report in the commercial real estate sector, a comprehensive study measuring the positive influence our shopping centres have on the local community and our stakeholders at European, country and asset level.   From a social perspective, the study found that URW’s shopping centres supported around 133,000 jobs in the European economy in 2022, with a multiplier effect of 66x. In other words, creating a job at a URW centre supports 65 other jobs in Europe.   As such, we act as a catalyst for social impact, supporting: -      The development of local non-relocatable employment, professional inclusion and upward mobility -      The development of lively spaces where people can live and be entertained, fostering social cohesion and diversity – 77% of our visitors come with friends and family and 46% of visits are driven by our dining offer -      The development of local charities and initiatives for the communities, with 100% of centres having a dedicated action plan that enabled us to support over 715 initiatives in 2022.   As part of our Better Places plan, we also commit to directly support at least 15,000 people a year through training, social inclusion and employment opportunities.   👉 Want to read more about the positive impact our places have on the cities and local communities where we operate? Reveal Marketing Research recently released the second edition of its national barometer, exploring Romanians' perceptions, attitudes, and actions towards sustainability. The findings offer a mix of hope and areas for growth. The impact of the Israel-Hamas conflict has extended beyond the battleground, with Western fast-food brands inadvertently drawn into the crossfire. McDonald's, Yum Brands, and Starbucks have all seen sales declines amidst Middle East turmoil. Yet even with a recent big one-day stock dip, McDonald's demonstrates resilience with a 0.22% price increase in the last 6 months. A few key points/takeaways: - American brands can be seen negatively in countries that may sympathize with Palestine. - Local franchise owners sometimes express opinions that impact perception and sales of the wider brand. - Starbucks was negatively impacted by false social media claims of taking sides. He started working in his father's small store, where he learned the value of hard work and discipline. In his early twenties, he became a store manager for an American business involved in the local shoe industry. He opened his first shoe mart in Manila in 1948, which was just the beginning of his journey. He went on to establish 49 supermalls in the Philippines and China, 62 department stores, 56 supermarkets, and over 200 grocery stores. Besides, he owned Banco de Oro, the second-largest bank in the Philippines, as well as huge real estate properties. Henry Sy's success can be attributed to his commitment to continuous education and improvement, his perseverance in times of crisis, his ever-lasting optimism, and his tough attitude. He believed in thinking big, starting small, and moving fast. He stuck to his core business and his area of expertise. He strived to serve the convenience of the public and wanted shopping at his malls to be a unique and enjoyable experience. McDonald’s and Starbucks, two of the largest American restaurant chains, have reported that the Israel-Hamas war had an impact on their sales figures towards the end of last year. McDonald's shares fell by almost 4% on Monday after it was revealed that a sales slowdown in the Middle East contributed to the underperformance of its fourth-quarter revenue. Starbucks' stock has also fallen by roughly 2% since Tuesday, when the company disclosed that the war had negatively affected its US sales in the final three months of 2021. Starbucks faced boycotts when Starbucks Workers United, a union representing hundreds of the company's unionised cafes, posted in support of Palestinians, which led to backlash from conservatives. Starbucks distanced itself from the tweet, which the union later deleted, and sued Workers United for trademark infringement. Starbucks CEO, Laxman Narasimhan, said that the company's sales in the Middle East were weak, but boycotts also hit its US cafes. The chain's US same-store sales increased by 5% in its fiscal first quarter that ended on Dec. 31, but foot traffic decreased. McDonald's saw a decline in fourth-quarter sales in the Middle East after its Israeli licensee offered discounts to soldiers, resulting in some customers boycotting who oppose the country's offensive in Gaza. McDonald's does not expect its Middle Eastern sales to recover until the war ends. However, unlike Starbucks, McDonald's did not report any impact on its US sales. These two restaurant giants became some of the largest US companies to report that the Middle East conflict had affected their sales, and it is likely to affect demand in future quarters as well.
