My 95-year-old mother always says, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Let's talk about a proactive approach to combating homelessness. We only have to look outside our doors to realize we have a homelessness problem. One that costs us ... to house one person in a shelter bed is $ 1932.00; in a provincial jail, $4333.00; in a hospital bed, $10,900.00. So, how can we proactively approach the social problem of homelessness? Did you know that there is a correlation between homelessness and children being raised in the foster care system? Did you know that New Brunswick has approximately 1000 children in foster care, with over 500 adoptable children? Did you know that 3 of my grandchildren are now part of this statistic? This month has been challenging for my family, to say the least. I now have 3 grandchildren in 2 different homes. But we are ONE family. And I am fighting hard to get my grandbabies back home with their family. But this is a social problem that will require a social solution one that I call HOME, our mission is to keep siblings together and out of the foster care system. This time it's personal and I am asking you to join me in this war against generational poverty at the home front. Together, we can be the change we want to see, by creating systemic change and disrupting the cycle of homelessness by providing a safe, stable home environment for our future generation -- our children. Systems are not meant to raise children, families are. Over the next 6 months, the government will pay a minimum of $20,000 to keep my 3 grandchildren in foster care. WHAT? This is unjust. This money could be invested in our kinship care model of child rearing by keeping the children with family. The time for change is NOW! I am looking to raise $5000.00/month to establish HOME. 💡 Did you know, every year, approximately 700 children will age out of the foster care system in #Georgia, and 27,000 will age out nationwide. To put these numbers into perspective, the average public school in a suburban area contains around 656 students, and in the fall of 2020, the University of Georgia had 29,765 students enroll in their undergrad programs. However, for those aging out of the foster care system, this #transition can be filled with uncertainty and challenges. It's imperative that we rally around these young individuals, offering them the #support they need to #thrive. Without the safety net of family support, these young adults are at a higher risk of unemployment, homelessness, and a lack of higher education opportunities. #Support systems can make a world of difference. #Programs that provide housing assistance, job training, and educational opportunities are crucial. Every year in the New York City area, hundreds of young adults age out of foster care facing daunting statistics: 20% risk homelessness, 25% may encounter the justice system, and 50% risk their children entering foster care. Hearts to Homes is changing these outcomes: → 89% of our recipients maintain stable housing, breaking the cycle of homelessness and incarceration. → 90% of custodial parents provide stable environments for their children, preventing the next generation from entering foster care. → Our support has contributed to 30 college graduates and aids 121 current college students in their educational pursuits. We have been duped to believe that foster care and adoption are the panacea for the suffering and safety of children. If we listen to the voices of adoptees, children who have survived foster care, and families torn apart by separation, a more complex and sobering narrative emerges. We cling to the hope that our intervention is the key solution. While in some rare cases it might be, more often it isn't. Instead, we've inadvertently contributed to a false narrative and a larger issue: a vast industry that thrives on separating families, often those grappling with poverty, and 'rehoming' children. This industry, fueled by millions of dollars, continues despite its dismal outcomes, driven by a deep-seated belief that we can save children from their families. However, the reality is starkly different. Most parents and families, despite their struggles and trauma, deeply love their children. The issue often lies in poverty and years and years of complex trauma. Most of these families who we take their kids don't need separation; they need support and healing. They need concrete support and safe spaces to grow, heal, and to love and support each other in a healthier ways. True change is a complex process that cannot be mandated. It happens when people are ready and willing to face the hard work of healing, ready to get better or do better, supported by love and understanding. This is the path we should be fostering – not one that leads to family separation, but one that nurtures family healing. We are committed to creating these nurturing environments, going beyond mere housing or skill-building. Our aim is to enable deep, emotional healing, allowing people to discover their worthiness of love and to harness this love as fuel for their growth and betterment. The goal is not just to help families rebuild their own lives but to reignite spirits, to help people find their purpose. We must move beyond the illusion that separation is the solution and embrace the more challenging, yet profoundly more rewarding path of healing families together. This is the cure we should be collectively striving for – a community where families are supported to heal and thrive, together.
