Life as a hotelier can be fast-paced and challenging, but also incredibly rewarding. Introducing this week’s #HotelierOfTheWeek! 🥂 Andy Barnsdale is the General Manager at The Principal York (currently being rebranded to The Milner York) and started his career behind the bar in a hotel on the Isle of Wight for a summer season, with the intention of learning as much as he could so he could fulfil his goal to one day run a pub. Instead, Andy found himself on a management track moving across different roles within hospitality, ultimately progressing to become a General Manager across multiple resorts for Bourne Leisure Ltd. “From that point on I knew exactly where I wanted my career to go, I had my sights set on management in hotels,” Andy said. Andy moved on to become General Manager at multiple venues, which provided him valuable experience to run large scale period properties and successfully grow their business and people. For Andy, every day as a hotelier is a unique adventure. In his role, he thrives on the unpredictability of each day, finding joy in the diverse challenges and rewards that come his way. Andy revealed that the most fulfilling aspect of his role is witnessing the hard work of his dedicated teams come to fruition, resulting in exceptional hospitality experiences for guests. Andy takes immense pride in mentoring his team members, helping them grow and supporting them in achieving their goals. Currently, Andy is excited about the ongoing rebranding of The Principal York. He has played a pivotal role in promoting top employees to key positions to ensure a smooth transition in the hotel's identity and culture. Walking into the hotel each morning, he said “I feel a deep sense of pride and accomplishment.” Andy emphasised the importance of thorough research and first-hand experience for anyone entering the hotel industry. He advises prospective candidates to visit the property they are interested in, engage with the staff, and experience the hotel as a guest. This simple yet profound step can make a significant impression during the interview process. The hotel industry offers a multitude of opportunities for career growth and seizing these opportunities with a willingness to get involved is key to building a successful career in hospitality. Throughout his career, Andy has had the privilege of working with outstanding people and properties, achieving commercial success, and winning multiple awards. Among his accolades are receiving two rosettes and an AA 4-star rating for his hotels. However, Andy considers the ongoing rebranding of The Principal York to be a defining moment in his career. Being part of the historic and iconic York hotel’s transformation offers a sense of great pride and honour for Andy, as he looks forward to solidifying the upcoming Milner York’s reputation as the city's best-loved hotel. Introducing this week’s Hotelier of the Week! Chris Wayne-Wills FIH MI is the Chief Executive Officer at Crerar Hotels Group and has racked up over 30 years in his hospitality career. Recalling how the three decades have presented wonderful opportunities, Chris told us how he has previously enjoyed the role of General Manager of remarkable hotels including The Roxburgh in Edinburgh, which is now a Kimpton, Slayley Hall and the iconic The Midland in Manchester.   After graduating Chris began working in sales, both reactive and proactive, where he then worked towards becoming Deputy General Manager. Chris said: “This illustrated perfectly how quickly the hotel industry allows you to climb up the management ladder. I was only 25 when I was appointed General Manager by Ramada Jarvis Hotels of its Ellersley House Hotel in Edinburgh. I then worked my way up in Ramada Jarvis and a few years later was General Manager of the group’s largest hotel, 272-bedroom Manchester Piccadilly Hotel, with banqueting facilities for over 1,000 people.”   With a career so rich in experience, Chris has also worked as a Regional Managing Director for Macdonald Hotels & Resorts where he ran a variety of venues including the The Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh and was also CEO of the Macdonald Aviemore Resort. “I worked with Marriott Hotels for three years as a Cluster General Manager for Scotland and the North of England before becoming CEO of Crerar Hotels at the start of 2020,” added Chris.   Chris revealed how seeing people grow and flourish gives him the greatest satisfaction, telling us it’s one of his favourite aspects of the job. “It is incredibly rewarding to see people I’ve worked with develop. Former heads of department and colleagues are now General Managers and in senior industry positions,” Chris commented. When asked what advice he would give someone coming into the hotel sector, Chris said: “Be prepared to work hard, but also focus on ‘who’ you are working for, not just ‘what’ you are working as. Ensure that your growth and development are being taken seriously, both by yourself and your employer.   “Join the Institute of Hospitality as early as possible to help you focus on your own development and get access to a mentor. Utilise every learning and networking opportunity you can get. Work hard and have humility in all positions as well as realising it’s a ‘team first’ industry where your contribution to your team will always be rewarded.”   As a team, Chris revealed that Crerar Hotels have had a great yeah, he shared a couple of proud achievements, and said: “We were awarded the AA Hotel and Hospitality Services Small Hotel Group of the Year Award which is recognition for us all in the company and for each of our hotels. I also become a Master Innholder this year, which is something I had strived to achieve for a long time. However, I don’t believe we have reached the pinnacle of what we can achieve and I am excited for our plans for 2024 and beyond.”
