Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth

It was fantastic to welcome over 100 young Londoners – and a Formula E GEN3 car - to City Hall this morning.  Green careers are essential for London’s future economy and for building a net-zero city by 2030.     It was inspiring to hear from the Formula E "Girls on Track" programme, which aims to give young women an insight into the many career opportunities available on and off the track and promote gender equality in motorsport.    Employers! If Formula E’s fantastic work motivates you to engage with schools and colleges to access the talent pipeline of the future, contact [email protected] #GirslOnTrackFE The Mayor of London is committed to the workforce of the future. Growing sectors such as green tech are a key part of this, as is our commitment to create more than 150,000 good, new jobs through an ambitious growth plan for London. To support our young people to learn about and get into the jobs of the future, £14 million is being invested in our four London Careers Hubs through the GLA, through the Careers and Enterprise Company (CEC) and through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, supporting 695 secondary schools, as well as FE colleges, Alternative Provision and Special Schools. Our London careers programme aims to show young people that everything is possible. We seek to reveal the different pathways into the many and varied good jobs out there waiting for young people. Our work with Formula E is an excellent example of how employers and schools can work in partnership to deliver good quality careers education and help to build a diverse workforce pipeline. To achieve a net-zero London by 2030, we need innovation. Throughout this year, Formula E will be joining forces with our London Careers Hubs to work with teachers in schools and colleges, providing insights and encounters for students that aim to open up and inspire new aspirations and opportunities for them. The Mayor is already funding a broad range of green skills and identifying priority green jobs to shape his future work in this area. And he is involving young people too. Our kit car programme working with GreenPower Motor Company Inc., CGI and Cubico Sustainable Investments is an ongoing STEM project in action. This project will give students the opportunity to design, build and race their own kit car, allowing them to not only build green skills, but to develop those soft skills that are so important in the workplace; it also will encourage problem solving, teamwork and communication. Every Londoner should be able to access the benefits of the city’s growth to harness the talent we have in London, to fill the jobs of the future with a skilled workforce and make the capital a city that is fairer, safer and greener for all.
