If an employee behaves in a toxic way towards other people then I would not class them as a “high performer.” Performance is not just about delivering direct financial value to a business. The way in which a person interacts with the team and their impact on others is also an important KPI. Management can set the expectation for staff to behave in a way that is in keeping with a positive business culture and take the time to explain what this looks like. Sometimes support, training and coaching can help people improve communication skills and self awareness. Maybe they are having a hard time themselves? Toxic behaviour from one person may lead to loss of confidence and burnout across the team and will effect the bottom line sooner or later. Toxic behaviour should therefore always be proactively addressed in an empathetic way rather than ignoring the problem and hoping it may go away.

"Who knew workplace culture could be so dramatic? It's like a never-ending episode of a reality TV show, but with less glamour and more passive-aggressive behavior. Let's strive for a workplace culture that's more like a sitcom - full of laughter, support, and the occasional office prank."

Not my quote, “Never tolerate brilliant jerks” There is research that shows initially these people may improve productivity, but there becomes a tipping point where there contribution is not enough to overcome the outcomes as a result. When others begin to leave because of the jerk, and others become less productive because leadership tolerated the jerk- it’s too late! #morehumanworkplaces
