You win in the draft.
Too often, companies are looking for great service technicians to fill current roles and needs. Unfortunately, the boiler industry doesn't have a surplus of great service technicians ready to come to work.
That is where hiring on potential comes in. Companies need to hire as many people as they can who they think "could" be great service technicians and see how it works out.
Professional sports teams get it wrong every single year on people's potential, and yet they are willing to continuously draft new people to build a great team in a couple of years. It doesn't happen overnight, and overpaying superstars rarely leads to championships.
Not every person a company hires has the potential to be a "A" level service technician. And that is okay. Companies go through seasons of growth, and they may need some role players who fill a specific role but will not be at the company long term.
Boilers run 24/7 and there is no offseason for companies to regroup and train talent. But if companies continually have fresh people coming into the organization who are properly supported, they will find in a couple of years the "A" service technicians they were looking for on day one.
Not everyone will stick around for those couple of years of development.
And that's ok.
But don't allow the fear of people leaving the company to keep you from investing in them.
