For wheelchair users, travelling by using ride-hailing apps, like Uber and Lyft, can be complicated. On March 20, a class action was announced against Uber and Lyft in British Columbia for allegedly not providing service to a wheelchair user. One of the goals of the class action is to bring about systemic change to the companies’ practices. https://lnkd.in/g-YB6Wpv #Uber #Accessibility #ClassAction

Soo excited to share my second new publication! In this thought piece, I highlight three reasons why app-hailed travel remains inadequately accessible to wheelchair users: the app-business model, lack of regulations, and precarity of platform work. It is important to note that the challenges that wheelchair users experience in app-hailed travel are old; it is simply the transportation-service model that is different. Essentially, new travel options, old discriminatory practices. In this piece, I also outline policy implications and considerations. 1. Regulations that take into consideration the 21st tripartite relationships among users, platforms, and providers, 2. Tech workplace policy that is inclusive of disabled workforce to inform tech design through lived experience 3. Business policy that does not exclude some groups by default. #platform #apphailing #disability #trasportation #regulations #a11y #wheelchair https://lnkd.in/eimphPJe

Mobility for everyone, anytime, anywhere - that's what we do ✨ For us this means that our mobility solutions are also accessible for people with reduced mobility or people with visual impairments! ☝️ Accessibility is especially important to us as people with disabilities are often highly dependent on #publictransport. Modern technology such as our #software can make existing public transport more accessible and therefore help people with disabilities live much more independent lives 🚆🆓 📱Our ioki Passenger #App features aim to simplify #accessibility for people with restricted mobility when it comes to accessing public transport through 🔠 dynamic font sizes, 🧑🦽 the option to select wheelchair spaces, 🩼 the option to specify any necessary walking aids (e.g., walking frames), 💬 a read-aloud feature via voiceover and 📞 the option to book rides via telephone, 🖥️ The ioki Operator also assists in making #ondemand services more accessible to people with disabilities: 🚌 The feature "matching ranks" can be used to assign a higher rank to certain vehicles. This ensures that for example #barrierfree vehicles are only deployed for regular ride requests if all other vehicles are occupied and thus making them available for when people with restricted mobility need them. As a sight impaired person, navigating the complexities of digital products, encountering apps truly accessible to everyone is a rare pleasure. Namma Yatri, however, stands out as a shining example of inclusivity at its finest. This ride-hailing app, born right here in India, doesn't simply consider accessibility – it champions it. From the flawlessly screen-reader-friendly interface to the intuitive and logical design, every element feels crafted with my needs in mind. But Namma Yatri's dedication goes beyond pixel-perfect UI. The app prides itself on its dedicated team of drivers, meticulously trained and sensitized to the needs of passengers with disabilities. This ensures a seamless and comfortable journey every time, fostering a sense of independence and confidence rarely found in the ride-hailing world. Namma Yatri isn't just a convenient app; it's a revolution in accessibility. It showcases that inclusive design isn't just a lofty ideal, but a tangible reality. By prioritizing accessibility at every stage and investing in driver training, Namma Yatri sets a groundbreaking standard for the entire world. My deepest gratitude to the entire Namma Yatri team, including the exceptional drivers who make every ride a testament to inclusion and respect. You are true champions of empowerment, and your example shines brightly for all to follow. JUSPAY #DigitalAccessibility #madeinindia #NammaYatri #RideForEveryone #TrainedDriversMatter

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a recent experience I had with the FREENOW app while trying to order a taxi in London. Most of the time, these taxis are wheelchair accessible with ramps, which is great. However, this particular taxi model didn't allow my head to fit under the roof, so I had to cancel the booking. Unfortunately, I was charged £5 for the cancellation, simply because the vehicle wasn't accessible for me. Now, I understand the vehicle was as it was, and it wasn't the driver's fault either. Equally, it wasn't my fault. This got me thinking about all the times we've had frustrating experiences with technology not working as it should. Whether it's an app that crashes, a device that doesn't fit our needs, or services that don't take accessibility into account, it's a common issue many of us face. So, how could they change the app to avoid this kind of discrimination in the future, ensuring a better user experience for everyone, even if not every single vehicle will be suitable for everyone? Please share your thoughts on how technology can improve to be more inclusive and user-friendly for all. Alt text - Martyn, a man with short brown hair, talks to the camera outside a hotel. He then drives his power chair up the taxi ramp but has to reverse because his head cannot fit under the door frame. Finally, the video shows the Free Now app on his phone screen with the cancellation. #AccessibilityMatters #UserExperience #DisabilityInclusion #TechFrustrations #TravelWithCare #FreeNow #WheelchairLife #London

Our last tip focused on the importance of convenience. This means convenience for all users, including those with disabilities 👐 When developing easy pickup flows and finding convenient locations, it’s therefore necessary to include accessibility features so that: • Parcel lockers are accessible by wheelchair ✅ • Parcels can be reached from wheelchair height ✅ • Visually impaired users can operate your locker ✅ One important aspect of this is to involve relevant end users at an early stage in the product development 🤝 Stay tuned for tip 6: Be no. 1 😊 #swipboxtips #accessibility #parcellockers #parcelpickup #apm
