Today commemorates the seventh anniversary of the death of Nobel Peace laureate and China’s foremost human rights advocate, Liu. He was imprisoned multiple times and spent his final eight years incarcerated for co-writing a manifesto for freedom titled Charter 08. Charter 08 called for an end to one-party rule in China and a society grounded in democracy and human rights. One of the demands was the abolition of the crime of inciting the subversion of state power, the very charge that led to Liu Xiaobo’s conviction. From the 1989 Tiananmen student protests to the drafting of Charter 08, Liu steadfastly pursued peaceful advocacy for democratic reform and a China governed by law with full respect for and protection of human rights. In honor of Liu Xiaobo’s enduring legacy, which remains unfulfilled for millions of Chinese citizens, HRF reaffirms its call for the #CCP to safeguard the right to fundamental freedoms for all its people.
