On July 28, Venezuelans will head to the polls for what were supposed to be the first free and fair elections in years following an agreement between Nicolás Maduro and the opposition. Yet, the regime has repeatedly violated its commitments and has ramped up the crackdown on dissidents. After unlawfully barring María Corina Machado and Corina Yoris from running, the opposition managed to nominate former diplomat Edmundo González as a unity candidate, even after the regime annulled the opposition primaries and arrested several of the organizers. The increased persecution of opposition members and critics, a closed civic space, restricted freedom of the press, and the unlawful use of state resources for campaigning have undermined what was meant to be a fair electoral process. The regime even backtracked on its promises and barred the EU and other democracies from monitoring the vote. The international community, especially those who negotiated the electoral agreement in Barbados, should continue to pressure the regime to comply with its commitments and international obligations to respect fundamental rights and freedoms. HRF stands with Venezuelans in this crucial moment and calls on the regime to provide guarantees of a free and fair election that allows for a peaceful democratic transition in Venezuela. https://buff.ly/3y0w2G4
