When you hear the term 𝗛𝗥, what picture comes to your mind first? I've been engaging in meaningful conversations with HR professionals to debunk all the myths in my head and to really find out their pain points, daily lives, motivations, and aspirations. In my constant communications with them, I learned that the only way to understand a certain profession is to constantly talk to those who practice it, and to listen intently to them without any judgment. A sneak peek into HR Terminologies: Halo Effect is a cognitive bias where our overall impression of a person influences how we feel and think about their character. If we perceive someone positively in one aspect, such as appearance or likability, we tend to extend that positivity to their other qualities, even if we lack specific evidence. For instance, if you find a colleague attractive, you might unconsciously assume they’re also competent or friendly. This bias can impact objective decision-making and evaluations in HR. ⚠️ Breaking Stereotypes in HR ⚠️ As an HR manager, I have been judged based on my age, complexion, and marital status. People have told me, " You don't look like a manager, you seem too young. Employees won't listen to you." But I believe that age has nothing to do with Job title and capability. Despite these biases, I continue to excel in my role, handling everything a manager does. It's time we move beyond superficial judgements and recognize the true skills and dedication that professionals bring to the table. I don't like to tell people I'm in HR. I'm always nervous about how they will respond. Let's face it, this job has a lot of baggage. "Lawyers with a few more feelings" "Busybodies" "Company cops" "Useless" Just a few of the terms I saw thrown around by non-HR people in last week's discourse over SHRM's decision to drop Equity from their DEI language. People going out of their way to degrade the profession in a fiery conversation of HR people fighting for what they felt was right. Fighting for the same folks insulting them. While I don't want to understate the powerful sense of unity many of us felt last week... There's still so much negativity surrounding the work we do. Now that we have each other's attention. Now that so many of us disagree with the status quo. Now that we know we're not alone in feeling that this industry needs a change. What happens next? I'm not much of a joiner. Hopping into the next HR group makes me itchy. But, I don't want this conversation to stop here. I believe that we can shift the tide to build more human workplaces. But that is difficult to do with the negative image our work carries. How do we build trust and confidence? How do we gain the same level of respect and empathy that we strive to give others?

HR can be one of the most frustrating roles in the workplace, and a good sense of humour is essential! I saw these two signs today and just had to have them.
