Statement on Penrhos Disappointingly yet again I find myself correcting untruths being spread about me which I believe are politically motivated. It would be disingenuous of me to pretend - for short term political gain - that I can influence local planning issues when I cannot. I am always willing to listen to the concerns my constituents have about Penrhos and to share these with the Council on their behalf. I have regular telephone and face to face surgeries to discuss any concerns my constituents have. If you would like to arrange to discuss Penrhos or any other issue with me my contact details are here: https://lnkd.in/eS5JpQzW Planning is fully devolved to the Labour Government in Cardiff. As such planning decisions are made by locally elected Council representatives and appeals or reviews must be called in by the Welsh Government. I represent Ynys Môn as part of the UK Government in Westminster, which has no jurisdiction at all in Welsh planning. The decisions made about Penrhos were taken by the Isle of Anglesey County Councillors democratically elected to represent the local community. This decision was taken on 6th November 2013 - more than 6 years before I became your Member of Parliament. The minutes of the Council meeting and how your local councillor voted can be found on page 17. https://lnkd.in/ejzhv5-A The most recent decisions on the Land & Lakes development at Penrhos made by the Isle of Anglesey County Councillors was in June 2023. Details of the meeting including how councillors voted can be found here. https://lnkd.in/eZvyY8jX The insinuation that I am financially involved with Land & Lakes demonstrates the level some are prepared to stoop for political gain. When the island elected me - as you would expect in my role as your Member of Parliament - I met with several developers that have been granted planning permission by the Isle of Anglesey County Council including Land & Lakes. The UK Government website lists companies looking for investment. Land & Lakes were placed on this list a long time before I became your Member of Parliament. I was not involved with Land & Lakes being placed on this list. This link demonstrates that Land & Lakes are no longer on the investment list. https://lnkd.in/eYGPvZ79 I would strongly encourage my constituents to make their views on Penrhos clear to their local County Councillors. I would be happy to discuss any correspondence you receive. You can find who your County Councillor is here. https://lnkd.in/ejnAz3Rv I hope this statement corrects the untruths being spread about me that I believe are politically motivated.

Prime Minister James Marape avoids the motion of no confidence in his leadership. 😱 Opposition MPs are fuming over the decision, vowing to seek legal recourse. What's next for PNG's political landscape? The PNG parliament's acting speaker said that the private business committee met yesterday and formed the view that the motion should not be put to the floor today. Ever wondered who holds the keys to PNG's parliamentary agenda? Meet the private business committee, the behind-the-scenes players shaping the country's political destiny! 🎭 From deciding the fate of no-confidence motions to orchestrating the flow of parliamentary debates, these power brokers wield immense influence. 💼💥 Their decision to delay or block the motion indicates a strategic move to either protect or challenge Marape's leadership, depending on the political dynamics within the committee and broader parliamentary factions. #politics #politicians #PapuaNewGuinea #wtfmemes #whoa

100% this. Central Government needs to stop thinking of local government funding as just a series of press release and ministerial visit opportunities. Forcing councils into endless rounds of bidding for single pots of money and filling out endless forms isn’t just slow, but it drains capacity for delivering more meaningful change in both central amend local government. It’s also a shining example of how local government is infantilised by Whitehall despite over a decade of it being the most dynamic, effective and creative part of the public sector. https://lnkd.in/dcwbkGJx
End bidding pots and single year funding, says LGIU

By giving money directly to MPs, the PNG political system merges the legistlative with the executive. Over the last 20 years or so, the principle of seperation of powers (legislative, executive, and judiciary) has been progressively undermined. Legislators have become executors and vise versa: members of parliament wield executive powers in their districts, and governors now approve the laws that apply to themselves. The consequences of this merging of powers are varied and mostly negative. By making the membership in parliament so attractive, the system has increased competition between candidates Written by Nick Schwarz (The Politics of Give and Take, 2012)
