What would you do if you got a $725,000 bill after getting a surgery? As Dr. K says in the clip below, that price is neither logical nor acceptable. And, of course, the patient had no idea about the cost ahead of the procedure. N Kikkeri MD actually tried to estimate a fair cost during this week's Self-Funded with Spencer, and we arrived at an absolute maximum of 100k, and more likely around 60k. Still an expensive procedure, but that cost would be given upfront to the patient with no surprise billing afterward. Check out my full conversation with Dr. K this week on Self-Funded with Spencer, available now on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you get your podcasts. #healthcareinnovation #bundledsurgery #transparentcare #ambulatorysurgery #costeffectivehealthcare #qualitycare #healthcarecosts #emerginghealthcare #patientcentric #affordablehealthcare #healthcaresolutions #healthcarefuture #selffunded #podcast

This latest episode of The Movement Prescription Podcast with Hussain Al-Zubaidi and Craig Blain highlighted the power of language to utilise time-sparse opportunities. This is not a new concept, with my mother-in-law frequently talking about neuro-lingustic programming (NLP) and reiteration of some points in previous episodes made by Hamish Reid and Noemi Molnar. But this is important in highlighting the value and also in leading to change in behaviour. My take homes: 🏋♂️ Use empowering language. Hussain talked about the phrase 'wear and tear' to discuss osteoarthritis, a commonly used phrase which has the potential to remove ownership and it implies there's nothing that can be done to improve symptoms. 👨⚕️ Remember a consultation is a meeting of two experts: a point repeatedly highlighted in the Active Conversations course ❔ Use questions as a tool to reframe thinking. I loved Craig's miracle question: "If you were to achieve YOUR GOAL [e.g. weight loss] tomorrow, what would life look like?" Would be great to hear your thoughts, and thanks to Hussain Al-Zubaidi and Craig Blain for a wonderful episode!

Are 95% of MSK surgeries really unnecessary? Heidi Ojha and I discussed it on the newest episode of Self-Funded with Spencer. If a surgery is no more effective than doing nothing at all, not only is it cheaper to "do nothing", but actually safer. More surgeries = more risk, and the more that can be avoided the more lives that will be impacted for the better. This isn't an anti-surgery episode; surgery saves lives, but unnecessary surgeries are wasteful and dangerous. Join Heidi and I for more MSK discussion this week on Self-Funded with Spencer, available now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and wherever you listen to podcasts. #MSKHealthcareCosts #ConservativeCare #BehavioralHealthExpenses #EmployerPlanSpend #FeeForServiceModel #DataAccessibility #DiagnosticAlgorithms #PatientEmpowerment #HealthcareSystemsOptimization #AvoidingSurgeries #ChronicHealthcareSpending #PatientCenteredCare #selffunded #podcast
