Sister José Women’s Center, a Tucson-based nonprofit, is committed to the mission of aiding and uplifting women experiencing homelessness. At their low-barrier day center, they offer unaccompanied women stability and safety, providing them with a refuge to heal from the harsh realities of life in the United States. There are women centers and women's shelters but there are not enough beds. These elderly women are vulnerable, most of them have chronic illness or battling with dementia. They are experiencing homelessness because they cannot afford housing in Tucson anymore. Sweeping away homeless encampments is not the solution. Tucson, how can we help? We went out on the streets to listen to people, and the hardships of living in an RV might surprise you. While it might be easier than living in a tent, there are still significant hardships like: - Overcrowded RV space - Taking care of companion animals - The hardship of getting out of a tent Living in a tent has its own difficulties - The weather in Los Angeles has been brutal over the last week - It's freezing and people have little cover to keep themselves warm - All they have is their tent to keep themselves protected You can read more about these hardships in the carousel below. As hopeless as it sounds, there are solutions. The Giving Spirit Youth Council passed out winter survival kits to people on the streets recently. These kits included tarps and blankets as well as food and socks. Over the last week, I've had the opportunity to share the stories that stuck with me over time. The hardships that keep people on the streets and suffering. Hopefully, this pushes you to do more for your neighbors living on the streets. Soon, the Youth Council will launch its semester initiative regarding supporting domestic violence victims. You can make a difference with a donation there. The 10 yo and I (plus Eddie George, our puppy Go Bucks!) are heading outside in a few minutes for our 3rd annual, Covenant House Illinois National Sleep Out! Trying to make a small difference for homeless youth in our community. The Covenant House Sleep Out is not just an event; it's a call to action. Every year, thousands of young people face the harsh reality of homelessness. Charlie and I believe that no youth should ever have to endure the streets alone. Cheers also to my 1871 colleague Gabby Snedeker who has been participating for many years and longtime friend James Coleman who introduced me to this important organization. By sleeping out for one night, we stand in solidarity with these resilient young people and raise crucial funds to provide shelter, support, and opportunities for a brighter future.
