My Humble Observation🙏 The issue of engineering companies requiring enormous number of years of working experience in similar roles in the same industry before employing applicants to fill in these vacant positions should be revisited. As graduate electrical engineers, all of us went through school learning and being taught anything electrical and electronics. When you come to the job market, there are specifications like instrumentation engineer, control engineer, field engineer and many more. Meanwhile all these job descriptions were one of the many courses we were taught at school without having to do any majoring. Internships and National Service which even most people do not get the chance to do or learn anything very helpful are the only avenues for graduates to harness working experiences which cannot sum up to the work experience demands from applicants. I think that major industry players or these major companies should liaise with tertiary institutions to train students who are excelling or excelled academically so that they get easily familiarized with their systems of operation for smooth transitioning into the job market or job openings in the industry. If you're looking for applicants with this enormous number of years of work experience to work in the industry, why not absorb these young and budding engineers so they easily get acclimatized to your system?. Job openings for electrical/electronic engineers in the mining, oil and gas industries are few and these job openings come with a requirement of enormous number of years of work experience in a similar role. This brings up the question, who risks taking up inexperienced graduate engineers and churn them into experienced engineers so you employ? Moving forward, I am humbly call on all institutions/companies in the industry to be considerate in their demand for work experience. To end with, kudos to every company out there, that have taken it upon themselves to risk it by employing young and not-so-experienced engineers and nurturing them to become seasoned engineers and expertise in their fields. #PLANT OPERATIONS Hi there, how are you doing today, I trust you are good. I've been sharing my internship experience for days now. I hope you've learnt something about the process industry. And for today's piece, I'd like to share what it's like to be a process engineer. What's expected of process engineers So process engineering in summary process/convert raw materials to finished product (meeting the client specification) at optimum condition (best operating parameters/rates with no environmental impact to minimize cost and maximize profit) As such the process engineers are obliged with duty to ensure that the process parameters don't deviate from the normal trend. Basically we have the panel/DCS operations, plant operations and servicing operations. The panel operations involve monitoring of process parameter trends to regulate the process to the design specifications. starting and shutting down remote equipment, opening and closing of control valves, log taking and tuning of the final elements etc. Field operations can be very tasty as you have to walk and climb platforms to execute jobs unlike the panel where you sit and monitor system screens Field operators record log books, close and open valves, start up equipment or give signals for start up to the panel, carry out daily plant routine activities, prepare sites prior maintenance, check for equipment working conditions. The #LLF (Look, Listen and Feel) method is employed by field operators to ascertain the working condition of equipment. This is all for today🤗 hope learnt a thing or two? Some basic and important questions asked during an interview.

Why can’t we just normalize the fact that your degree has nothing to do with your current job role? I’ve been working as a Software Engineer for 7 years now still everyone I meet asks the same thing, “Alex, you have a Master's degree in Chemical Engineering, how are you a Software Engineer today?” Yes, it’s no joke to shift your career from one domain to completely a different one. But as soon as I realized that I could not see myself doing a job as a chemical engineer in the long run - I knew I had to shift my focus. But, here’s why I think it’s high time we normalize it: 1. If I had continued working as a chemical engineer even though I wasn’t enjoying the job, I’d be killing my interest and wouldn’t have known what interests me. 2. I learnt from my father that “skills are bigger than just a degree” and exactly like him I wanted to do something substantial, he designed real oil factories and gas pipelines around the world. 3. I wanted to give my 100% to something that interests me so even though I could have continued working as a chemical engineer to make some money on the side as well I didn’t. 4. Shifting careers is not an easy thing especially when you choose to learn it 100% on your own, no matter what people say but it does take you a good 6 months to 1 year to be an expert in your field. I don’t know why it’s so difficult for people to understand that if you don’t like your job the best way forward is not to rant about it but to shift your focus to something that interests you.
