This week, President Biden welcomed President Joko Widodo of Indonesia to the White House, announcing new initiatives to deliver a better future for our citizens and a free, open, prosperous, secure, and resilient Indo-Pacific. https://ow.ly/crvX50Q7rME   USTDA initiatives highlighted include: Increasing Digital Connectivity in Rural Indonesia:  USTDA will support a grant for Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Informatics to assess the commercial and technical viability of deploying open radio access network technology to provide digital connectivity for approximately 1,621 unserved villages across Indonesia. Supporting Renewable Energy Mini Grids: USTDA intends to partner with Indonesia’s national utility PLN on a feasibility study for renewable energy mini-grids in five remote sites in Indonesia. This JETP project develops a replication strategy for wider renewable mini-grid implementation across the region and will be conducted by U.S. company TQ Automation in public-private partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s national labs under the Net Zero World Initiative.           Enhancing Power Connectivity within ASEAN:  USTDA plans to support a cross-border interconnections feasibility study to support two priority grid interconnection projects between Indonesia and Malaysia. The feasibility study helps to better utilize renewable energy resources and implement policies to advance clean energy and climate protection goals across ASEAN, in line with JETP goals. This project builds on the USAID-funded ASEAN Interconnection Master Plan Study in support of the ASEAN Power Grid.   Investing in Smart, Sustainable Development in Nusantara:  Building upon USAID technical assistance to develop smart building guidelines and green space management, USTDA and the U.S. Department of Commerce plan to fund an Indonesian trade mission to the United States and a U.S. business development mission to Indonesia to discuss best practices as Indonesia plans its new capital city. #Indonesia #Infrastructure #Digital #RenewableEnergy

Richard Nethercott delivered a keynote speech on the Sustainable Transformation of Electricity Market: For a Reliable, Green Future during the strategic summit segment of ASEAN Clean Energy Week's 7th year installment. In his speech, Atty Nethercott emphasized that, while sustainability is necessary, security is a risk that must be addressed. Therefore, a delicate balance must be achieved between greening the grid and securing the grid. In line with this aim, the Philippine roadmap to energy transition is recommended to treat power system reliability on equal footing as clean energy integration. ⚖️ How is the market access of VPPs regulated in different countries? We're all familiar with the 🇪🇺 European Commission's grand ambitions for the clean energy transition. But let's get real: the flexibility market is crucial for making those ambitions a reality, and Virtual Power Plants (VPPs) are crucial for the flexibility market. ❓ Yet, how exactly is this flexibility supposed to reach the grid? What about the market access rules? And which markets are even open to VPPs? ❓ Despite Europe's lofty goals, do you know how many EU countries actually allow VPPs to participate in ancillary services bidding? Research reveals that in countries like Spain and Italy, where renewable production is soaring, VPPs are still shut out of the ancillary service markets. And exactly the same countries are forking out more cash 💸 than others for ancillary services. But there's more. Did you know that Distribution System Operators (DSOs) in general are still lagging the development of distributed assets by preventing them from connecting to the grid? ❓ And which European country dares to be a pioneer in residential flexibility access to the market, not just in ancillary services but across wholesale markets too? Hint: it's not in the EU... Now, let's ask:   ❓ What's the European Commission actually doing to level the playing field? Are they taking action to standardize access rules for VPPs across different markets, from capacity markets to ancillary services and beyond? A few weeks ago, Climate Smart Ventures had the pleasure of co-organizing an interactive workshop addressing the pressing challenges faced by off-grid areas in the #Philippines: https://bit.ly/4cn6RLW. ☀️ Participants included representatives from electric cooperatives (ECs), government, private sector, and civil society organizations.  🏝 A key lesson from the workshop is that “hybridization” of off-grid areas can significantly reduce #power costs for island and off-grid consumers in the Philippines, while simultaneously unlocking socioeconomic benefits and #livelihood opportunities. ⏩ Hybridization in this context involves the integration of #renewableenergy (RE) and/or #battery storage into the existing diesel #energy infrastructure. 🍃 The workshop is part of a three-year project to help facilitate the modernization of EC’s respective off-grid areas. And that’s why we are happy to announce that Advario Singapore participates in Enterprise Singapore’s Sustainability Open Innovation Challenge 2023. The #openinnovationSG challenge invites innovative minds to devise sustainable solutions for industry challenges. We have focused our challenge statement on how the design of floating photovoltaic (FPV) platforms may be optimized to address operational and safety risks while maximizing solar energy generation. Advario terminals – such as our #Singapore terminal, pictured – cover a lot of space on land and sea. By harnessing the terminal’s unused sea spaces, the deployment of FPVs at such locations can help contribute to Singapore’s national target of deploying at least 2 gigawatt-peak of solar energy by 2030. Through collaboration, and by inviting outside views, we hope to be #partnersforprogress and overcome pain points that hinder the wider adoption of FPV in Singapore by leading this challenge of deploying FPV systems. We hope that in time it brings benefit to the industry and Singapore at large, while contributing towards national and Jurong Island’s local decarbonization efforts.
