Ammonia is one of the alternative fuels that can help the maritime industry achieve zero or near-zero carbon emissions. There are, of course, many risks and hurdles on the way – to begin with, the gas is hazardous to humans and the environment, and also explosive. Our colleagues from Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping and Lloyd's Register have published a comprehensive study of the onboard safety risks that using ammonia entails. They compared how effectively risks can be mitigated in each of the three ammonia-fueled vessel designs: a container ship, a tanker, and a bulk carrier. To do this, they applied an iterative quantitative risk assessment method known (QRA). This powerful data-driven method estimates the effectiveness of risk mitigations by adding different modifications to the QRA model and observing their impact on the risk calculation. https://lnkd.in/e6vdBSRZ #alternativefuel #maritimeindustry #carbonemissions #decarbonization #greenammonia #shippingindustry #sustainableshipping #maritimeinnovation #oceandata
