As a keen golfer (& European) the last couple of weeks have made for some fantastic viewing. The European Ryder Cup and Solheim Cups teams got their hands on their respective trophies in two very different fashions.   Here are some of my thoughts:   Perseverance: The Ladies responded with great tenacity after being 4-0 down and the American men fought until the end. It shows that even when you're the best in the world, things do not always go your way or to plan however what makes them the best, is that they continue to learn and adapt to become better players.   Leadership: The European men lead from the front. After a record breaking Friday, there was no complacency as they remained focussed on the task in hand, inspiring the juniors members of the team to perform at their very best.   Teamwork: All the members of all the sides would not be where they are today without the support and encouragement of those around them. The players will get the headlines however there is tremendous detail which goes into events like the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup which often goes unnoticed but is equally as valuable. You cannot succeed on your own.   All three of these values can be applied to almost any situation, particularly in the work environment. We can often lose perspective however watching the World #1 in tears demonstrates the continuous quest for perfection.   But watching the elation of the European Team celebrating on the bus last night - well that's all the Monday motivation I need.

Just watched "The Boys in the Boat" and wow, what a ride! Even though I knew how it would end, I found myself completely caught up in the drama. But it was after the credits rolled that something really hit me. You know what's fascinating about rowing? To make the boat go forward, every single teammate faces backward. Yet somehow, they work with a shared purpose, perfectly aligned in their process, and laser-focused on constantly improving their performance as a team. For those boys, that dedication and unity led to Olympic gold. It got me thinking about our own teams at work and in life. Are we all facing the same direction, metaphorically speaking? Are we truly aligned in our goals and processes? And most importantly, are we constantly striving to improve our collective performance? In our fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in our individual tasks and lose sight of the bigger picture. But just like those rowers, our success depends on how well we work together, how in sync we are, and how committed we are to our shared goal. So today, I'm challenging myself – and you – to think about this: What are you doing to make your team go forward? Are you rowing in harmony with your colleagues, or are you unknowingly creating drag? It's worth pondering because when we truly come together, who knows? We might just achieve something golden too.

The most successful teams have one thing in common: They’re ferociously driven. I was on the UK Sport World Class programme. I’ve been part of teams that have produced Olympic medalists. I’ve also been part of teams that couldn’t tie their own shoe laces. And the best teams I’ve been a part of have one thing in common: They’re ferociously driven. A lot of the time it's driven by desire and frustration to be at a level higher than they currently are. So put that into your organisation, by doing this: Tell everyone exactly where you’re trying to get to, and why. And that’ll be the start of you creating your driven team.

One of the greatest benefits of sport is that it brings people together.

Messi picture was removed from the wall of Barcelona club after just 24 hours! After spending 20 years at Barcelona achieving great accomplishments titles for himself and the club not to mention the billions he generated. This picture should always be in front of you... to remind you of a very important lesson... That the place where you grow and exert effort is the first one to forget you. It forgets any work or achievement you've done honestly... As soon as you leave that place or distance yourself from it a little bit No one will remember anything. It will be forgotten as if you never existed in the first place. The most important thing is to work for yourself and on yourself. When you leave a place you should create a new place for yourself. And you must understand well that there is no place that lasts or a position that remains. There is nothing but your reputation and ethics. In our world your position capabilities and skills have no value over time. You determine their worth. It's all about yourself. Succeed for yourself first and for those who wish for your failure second.

Does team culture really matter??? Well, if you've been following the recent Ryder Cup action in Italy, you've witnessed an epic clash between the European and USA teams. While the golfers' skills were undoubtedly impressive, one crucial factor stood out: the power of team culture. The European Ryder Cup team's triumphant victory wasn't just about their precision putting and powerful drives; it was about the camaraderie and unity that fueled their performance. It was as though they had a secret handshake for success! Their togetherness was palpable, and it played a pivotal role in their victory. Now, let's talk about our American friends. The USA team, despite having some of the world's best golfers, seemed to lack the same level of preparation and team spirit. Reports hinted at a "Old Boys Club" atmosphere in their backroom, where it felt more like a 1940's Hogwarts than a preparation zone. The result? Well, not what they hoped for, I'll tell you that. So, why is team culture so important? Think of it this way: golf is a solitary sport, but the Ryder Cup is a team event. Just like any other team, the chemistry among the individuals can make or break the it. Are England going to win tonight?   Whatever you say about England and their Euros performance, you can’t deny that the team are together and now have a siege mentality.   Togetherness is everything in a team… or indeed a business! However uninspiring the tactics or strategy, they are still in the tournament. The ultimate goal is to win. When England won the 2003 Rugby World Cup some of the games weren’t pretty; they won ugly.   How you pull a team together and create ‘the edge’ is crucial to achieving very tough objectives. It’s about making sure people are in the right positions, not being afraid to try something different, giving people a voice, rewarding them for a job well done, picking them up (and listening) when it doesn’t go well, and to sometimes make the unpopular decision.   It’s tough out there, but England’s ability to dig in to the end, could see them win.   My system brings everyone in together.
