My newly published policy assessment with Transnational Institute on the agricultural trade between EU and Egypt during the Crisis period. This paper scrutinizes Egypt's trade agreements, focusing on the EU, and evaluating their impact on food security, poverty, and sustainable development, using the potato value chain as a case study. The paper analyses the various trade agreements into which Egypt has entered, focusing on the agricultural sector and its relationship with the European Union (EU). This analysis assesses the impact of these agricultural trading relationships on levels of food insecurity, poverty and sustainable development. An in-depth examination of the potato value chain – one of Egypt’s main export crops – is used to further unpack some of these linkages and impacts.

"In order to achieve its commitments under the SDGs, particular SDG 1 to reduce poverty and SDG 2 to end hunger and malnutrition, agricultural and food policies in Egypt need to prioritise rehabilitating small-scale agriculture and focus less on large companies in private, export-oriented agriculture. The European Union's Green Deal and its potential impact on Maximum Residue Levels (MRLs) could have far-reaching consequences for African farmers. The trend of decreasing MRLs as part of the EU's sustainability agenda may lead to trade disruptions, hindering economic growth and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals in many African countries. CropLife Africa Middle East (CL AME) believes that while sustainability is crucial, a one-size-fits-all approach fails to consider the unique climatic and agronomic conditions of the Africa Middle East region. CL AME calls for MRLs setting system to be based on evidence and science. Furthermore, CL AME supports MRLs based on Codex MRLs or Import Tolerances, established via independent scientific risk-assessment. Science-based MRLs are crucial for African countries' economic growth, food security, and regional stability. 🌍 New Publication Alert: "Markets, Power, and Potatoes" 📢 I am excited to announce the release of our latest study, "Markets, Power, and Potatoes: An Analysis of Agricultural Trade Between Egypt and Europe." This insightful publication, part of our ongoing series on agricultural trade between North Africa and the European Union, is now available thanks to the efforts of the Transnational Institute (TNI). Crafted with expertise by Mohamed Ramadan, this research offers a unique lens through which to view the agricultural trade dynamics between 2019 and 2022. It explores how significant global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Ukrainian crisis, have reshaped Egypt's agricultural export landscape. The study goes further to examine the critical and often overlooked aspect of unequal ecological exchange in these trade relationships. As the Series Research Coordinator, it has been an enriching experience to be part of this project. The study brings to light the multifaceted challenges and opportunities within the North Africa-EU trade context, making it a must-read for anyone interested in the future of sustainable and equitable trade. The 14th Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Agriculture, chaired by the Russian Federation, took place from June 27-28, 2024, in Moscow, Russia, under the theme "Strengthening Multilateralism for Just Global Development and Security." Global leaders discuss the Soil Initiative for Africa and the opportunities to strengthen food systems through the embrace and adoption of the Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils. The Vision for Adapted Crops and Soils (VACS) seeks to build a resilient food system grounded in diverse, nutritious, and climate adapted crops grown in healthy, fertile soils. I agree with Director-General Qu Dongyu that we need to appreciate the true costs of food production, especially when it comes to #environmental impacts. However, I believe the solutions should come from within local food systems as much as possible, with minimal external interference from organizations like FAO. #Farmers know their #land and communities best, so in-depth training, teaching, correction, education, and support for #farmers to adopt #regenerative practices is key. This #research is certainly eye-opening about the hidden costs of industrial #agriculture. But top-down regulations or taxes from outside entities may not be the answer. We need to empower farmers and #communities to make the transition themselves through #agroecology, cover cropping, #conservation tillage, and other regenerative practices that benefit their soils, reduce reliance on external inputs, and minimize #environmental harm. This will look different in every locale. #Local innovation, knowledge sharing, and #grassroots #leadership is necessary. It is exciting that we are starting to recognize and account for the true #costs of #food production. But lasting change will come from the ground up.
