Mental Healthcare for New Zealand’s youth continues to experience a rolling crisis with long waiting times for services. There have been calls to expand the mental health workforce and to diversify the range of available services. Our systematic review on understanding inequalities in access to adult mental health services in the UK was published in BMC Health Services Research yesterday. The take home message? Mental health services have not become more accessible in recent years. Actions to reduce inequalities moving forward should address barriers to population groups’ abilities to seek and reach services such as stigma-reducing interventions, and re-designing services and pathways. Advocacy Post - My hero big brother Andrew Carlson passed away 4-14-2023 from a tragic suicide. His mental health was treated not with a counselor - not trauma - not someone’s big brother who was hard of hearing and asking for our mom, but with a swat team, a social media live news media stream, and a drone. Mental health crisis should not be criminal crisis ever - period. A suicide should not occur steps away from over a dozen armed officers - period. Police officers are suppose to protect not be the fear of force . A sister first and a mental health clinician second, I implore our nation to do better treating men with mental health challenges and disabilities. The Association of American Medical Colleges published this opinion piece this month and it speaks Andrews story. We can and should be and do better. “Men in the United States die by suicide at a rate four times higher than women. And yet, men are diagnosed with depression and mood disorders at far lower rates….. Men aren’t the problem. The lack of trust in the mental healthcare system within the minority community is a result of historical mistreatment, discrimination, and disparities in access to quality care. Many individuals within minority communities have experienced systemic racism and bias within the healthcare system, leading to a deep-seated mistrust of mental health professionals. Additionally, cultural differences and language barriers can further exacerbate this lack of trust. In order to address these issues, it is essential for mental health providers to actively engage with and listen to the needs of minority communities, prioritize culturally competent care, and work towards building trust through transparency and collaboration.
