The latest draft statement coming out of #COP28 is pushing the brakes on fossil fuel phase out, and there is a growing (I hope 👀 ) movement of voices not just from civil society and scientists but also from business, finance and healthcare, who are calling for a credible 1.5°C plan because #LaterIsTooLate

So far, much has been achieved, including a historic agreement on Loss and Damage on the first day. But we need to keep going. 🗝 We don’t expect global leaders to meet these challenges alone. We’re asking them to develop and commit to plans to involve, inspire and inform citizens. People are the key to how we tackle the climate crisis. Countries can’t expect to make rapid progress if they ignore or exclude people from plans to tackle it. 👥 Climate Outreach is inviting global leaders to catalyse progress by planning how they’ll engage and involve their citizens. 💬 How we report on and discuss #COP28 matters. The talks are immediately relevant to people’s everyday lives. An orderly phase out of fossil fuels must, for example, involve the people who work in the sector. Communities directly affected by the energy transition must be allowed to play a part in determining their own future through consultation and access to information. All efforts and sources are required. It involves complex technical, economic, political and social challenges.

#COP28 is over and there a lot of mixed feelings and interpretations of the outcome of the negotiations. No agreement on the phase out of fossil fuels, but a first and important step into this direction. I am curious if this is really "the beginning of an end". Apart from the final report it was interesting to see that #CDR has been a very present topic. Compared to last year in Sharm there were several side events with focus on CDR almost each day. CDR was not part of the negotiations but is becoming a more and more important part on the agenda of a brought variety of actors. Anyway there still is a lot to do until #COP29 in Baku to have CDR recognized as an integral part to reach the 1.5 degree goal of the Paris Agreement.

Global warming has, in turn, dramatically altered natural cycles and weather patterns, with impacts that include extreme heat, protracted drought, increased flooding, more intense storms, and rising sea levels. Taken together, these miserable and sometimes deadly effects are what have come to be known as climate change. As greenhouse gas emissions blanket the Earth, they trap the sun’s heat. This leads to global warming and climate change. The world is now warming faster than at any point in recorded history. Climate change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil, and gas), which produce heat-trapping gases. Manufacturing and industry produce emissions, mostly from burning fossil fuels to produce energy for making things like cement, iron, steel, electronics, plastics, clothes, and other goods. Mining and other industrial processes also release gases. Cutting down forests to create farms or pastures, or for other reasons, causes emissions since trees, when they are cut, release the carbon they have been storing. Since forests absorb carbon dioxide, destroying them also limits nature’s ability to keep emissions out of the atmosphere. Detailing and discussing the human causes of climate change isn’t about shaming people or trying to make them feel guilty for their choices. It’s about defining the problem so that we can arrive at effective solutions. And we must honestly address its origins—even though it can sometimes be difficult, or even uncomfortable, to do so. Human civilization has made extraordinary productivity leaps, some of which have led to our currently overheated planet. But by harnessing that same ability to innovate and attaching it to a renewed sense of shared responsibility, we can find ways to cool the planet down.
