Recently I’ve posted print designs with CRABS and SHRIMPS, so when I saw that the next Spoonflower Design Challenge is “Crustacean Core”, I thought, hmm, time for LOBSTERS! FUN FACT: The claws of mature lobsters are different, one is the larger “crusher” claw (this dominant claw can be either left or right) that moves slowly and is used to break up hard food; the other is a smaller “pincher/cutter” claw that moves faster and is used to tear up soft food (they can even catch small fish with it!) Plant of the Day - Fiddle Leaf Fig! 🍃 ♦ The Fiddle Leaf Fig is one of the most popular plants for interior designers in both commercial and residential spaces. In 2016, The New York Times named the Fiddle Leaf Fig “The ‘It’ Plant of the Design World” due to its growing popularity and style. They have even made numerous appearances in TV shows, commercials, and movies. Their big, beautiful, green leaves are almost guaranteed to warrant a double-take from those passing by, similar to the gawks of amazement over the outfits at the Met Ball ✨ ♦ Indoors, Fiddle Leaf Figs are typically kept around 6' high. If you let them grow outside, they can reach heights of up to 60'! And for the record, unless you live in basically a perfect climate, we do not advise you to put your Fiddle Leaf Fig outside. 🤷♀️ ♦ The Fiddle Leaf Fig earned its name because the shape of its leaves is similar to that of a fiddle. The large leaves shaped like a violin represent the appearance of a fiddle! 🎻 ♦ If cared for properly (bright, indirect light and frequent watering + fertilizing), Fiddle Leaf Figs can live for 25-50 years! New product: Charatans Make 652 DC Sandblasted Panel Estate Briar Pipe, Lane Era While Dunhill may be Britain’s most famous pipe brand, Charatan is not only older, but has the honor of being the first to have made its pipes entirely in-house. ‘Charatan’s Make’ referred to the fact that, at a time when other pipe companies were sourcing stummels and stems carved from other companies before assembling them in their factories and workshops, Charatan made every part of their pipes on the Charatan premises. So began a legacy of high-quality pipe-making under the Charatan name, one whose employees, at one time or another, included Joel Sasieni, and Ken Barnes and Barry Jones of James Upshall fame. Collectors of Charatan pipes have their preferences for which ‘era’ of the make’s history was or is its best. From my experience, it is the Lane era (1961-77) that has the largest contingent of fans. And it’s hard to argue with those fans; the pipes made during Lane Ltd’s ownership of the make are excellent, in both their aesthetic and functional properties. This one belongs to what is known as the ‘first’ Lane era (1961-65), and is a fairly classic design, with one or two distinctions. It is a panel, or foursquare, though it’s slightly less angular than is traditional, having softer lines around its bowl; it’s also got Charatan’s proprietary double comfort stem, as was the norm during the Lane era. The condition is great. New product: Ardor Urano 2023 Bent Bulldog, Estate Briar Pipe, Unsmoked - $350 Like many Italian workshop brands, Ardor pipes are a family affair. The name itself is an acronym of Angelo Rovera and Dorelio Rovera, father and son pipe-makers who created the brand in 1972. The Rovera family’s history with pipes goes back much further, however, as Angelo’s own father, Francesco, had previously established the Sociedade Rovera pipe company with his brothers in 1911. All Ardor pipes are completely hand-made from briar that has been seasoned for at least 4-5 years, and the brand is noteworthy for its playful and innovative approaches to design. As a result, Ardor pipes are both quintessentially Italian, while also being somewhat different, having a style that is wholly their own. I’ve categorized this pipe as a bulldog, but I’ve done so because the shape of this Ardor doesn’t have an established name. It shows parallels with the “surfing bulldog” and “eskimo” shapes carved by Tom Eltang and many other artisans, but it isn’t exactly one of those either. What it does that is comparable to those shapes is that it warps and stretches the familiar lines of a bulldog; the shank has four sides, but it is also wider than it is tall; these sides also do not dissipate completely when they meet the bowl, resulting in a “lip” that ultimately runs parallel to the bottom of the pipe’s rim section, where bead-lines would traditionally be placed. It is a bold design, but it’s also highly ergonomic, as the concave recession that runs around the bowl, between the two lips, slides perfectly between the thumb and fingers. Whoever said that form and function was a binary choice? This Ardor is completely unsmoked, with an original bowl coating from the Rovera workshop. Fugabella Color, the hybrid resina-cemento® grout range from Kerakoll has proved very popular since its launch in the Middle East several years ago. The range was designed by Piero Lissoni with a range of 50 of the most relevant colours for modern interiors from delicate neutrals and gentle pastels to rich, intense shades. Recent changes to the formula mean that the grout now has an extended pot life of 60 minutes, allowing ample working time even when working across a large area. The new formula needs at least 800ml of water for a 3kg bag. It remains workable once mixed without changing consistency in the bucket, so you don’t have to add extra water which can lead to colour inconsistencies. The grout is thixotropic and fluid, light and easy to work with, without sliding off the trowel. Everything else is the same including the rich, intense colours which maintain the depth of colour and don't fade, and the lack of efflorescence. The purity of the materials employed along with the use of specific natural additives gives reduced water absorption, lower levels of joint staining and complete protection from common acid pH substances. NHL offers natural resistance to bacteria and fungi, without resorting to biocides.
