Today, the german federal parliament (Bundestag) confirmed the adaption of the new immission control law (37. BimSchV) with the following key highlights 1) green hydrogen needs to be generated with fully sustainable electricity 2) e-fuels from non biogenic origin (RFNBOs) can now officially be accounted for a total green-house gas (THG) reduction factor of 3 Thus, this new law sets clear standards (100 % sustainable electricity) and confirmed THG factors for the utilzation of chemical energy carriers such as hydrogen or other e-fuels.

The steel industry is changing, and that has far-reaching repercussions. The #Hüttentag in Essen, which we visited last week, again was able to draw the attention to the key points related to this topic. As Dr Peter Maagh of SHS - Stahl-Holding-Saar GmbH & Co. KGaA mentioned during his keynote, it is better not to talk about a Transformation, but to address this as a Disruption. It will not only be about simply exchanging an individual installation on a steel mill about an other one. More far-reaching changes will be necessary, both conceptually as well as logistically. It might even be that what we today refer to as the steel industry will become a supplier of other goods or services. An other very interesting topic: For all the different possible applications of green hydrogen, which of them will have the highest impact in CO2 reduction? The numbers indicate steel production as a clear winner. Also: although many people have a sustainable mindset, price also plays an important role in most buying decisions. Green steel will initially be more expensive compared to steel produced through classical routes. The Wirtschaftsvereinigung Stahl calculated the cost impact of the higher price on that of the end products they are used in, such as cars, wind turbines, white goods such as washing machines... This increase is expected to be between 0,1 and 5,5 %, depending on the application. This is rather reassuring. ⚒ Other topics addressed during the podium discussion: - Do we still need a steel industry in Europe? - Where will all the hydrogen that is needed come from? - How close to large-scale deployment are the new technologies for producing steel? Again a very neatly organized event addressing the important topics for the future of the industry in a very condensed way! We’re looking forward to participate again in 2024! 🗓

Huge news coming out of Germany today! Following the recent IPCEI annoucement in Spain last week (reminder in footnotes*), 23 German projects under Hy2Infra IPCEI wave were sent official funding notices! This unlocks 4.6Bn EUR grants from both the Federal and State level, with focus being on: 1.4 GW of electrolysis capacity 2000 Km of pipeline infrastructure 370 Gwh of storage 1800 tpa of LOHC use In addition to the 4.6Bn EUR in state aid support, the companies involved will invest an additional 3.3 Bn EUR of private capital Congratulations to everyone part of this, it is great to see the hydrogen sector taking shape in Germany! Our scientific partner Johannes Kepler Universität Linz published an interesting article about our joint project ZEUS in the “Standard” on 12 February 2024. Industry causes climate-damaging emissions, but captured carbon dioxide can be converted into valuable raw materials, as researchers in Linz have discovered. The chemical conversion of CO2 into valuable chemical raw materials is one of the “dream reactions” for sustainable production, with the electrocatalysis of carbon dioxide playing a promising role. The ZEUS project (Zero Emission throUgh Sector Coupling) for the development of CO2 electrocatalysts at a larger scale is realized by renowned research institutions and companies, including the metallurgical competence centre K1-MET.
