Twenty-five years ago today I started my career at Eli Lilly and Company. At one firm, I’ve had nine different roles, as a leader or individual contributor. Every position has been an incredible experience whether creating batch control systems, developing novel delivery devices, producing Lilly’s first external innovation challenge, interacting with startups, or founding the organization that created an entirely-new class of product for Lilly: Software as a Medical Device. There were very few cake walks and often huge challenges, especially when driving change within a 148-year-old pharmaceutical company, but every job was worth it. As you can read in books, articles, or case studies, the people in an organization make the difference. At Lilly this is so true. I’ve never been anywhere that has the customer as such a focus, and this is exemplified by the company’s purpose: “Lilly unites caring with discovery to create medicines that make life better for people around the world.” I’ve learned so much from the brightest people, not only how to develop and manufacture drugs and medical devices, but also in understanding diseases and healthcare ecosystem dynamics. I’ve had opportunities to work for and be mentored by great leaders within an incredible corporate culture. I’ve also had opportunities to connect and engage with amazing industry thought leaders in pharma and digital health. But my biggest joy has been in coaching or mentoring people. Nothing is better than helping others grow and succeed, and everything is better when you work with the best people. Twenty-five years seems to have flown by.

In the past few months, I've chatted with colleagues just coming into the industry seeking direction and clarity for their career path going forward. A question I always ask either party is, "What inspires you?" Which has been the guiding principle in my career in the biopharma industry for the past 16+ years. In the biopharma industry, consider aligning with organizations that prioritize a collaborative culture, innovation, and a commitment to improving human health. Look for companies with values that resonate with your own, such as integrity, transparency, and a dedication to scientific excellence. Seek inspiration from leaders in the field and stay updated on industry trends. Network with professionals, attend conferences, and participate in relevant online communities to build connections and stay informed about advancements. Embrace a continuous learning mindset, as the biopharma industry evolves rapidly. Pursue professional development opportunities and stay adaptable to new technologies and methodologies. Above all, find fulfillment in contributing to the greater purpose of advancing healthcare and improving lives. Cultivate a passion for the meaningful impact that your work can have on patients and the broader community.

I've spent nearly half of my 22-year career working in professional services for the life science industry, and it has been a rewarding career path. At times I find myself missing the excitement of being on the sponsor/manufacturer side developing or manufacturing a new product. 2 days ago, a group of University of Maryland School of Pharmacy students asked me: What is the most interesting and challenging part of being a consultant? Here's what I said: Some clients would love it if I responded within 60 min. Other clients would love if reduce my hourly rate by $50. Some would love if I did tasks outside of project scope. They are all right in their own way. Because every client has different expectations. That is challenge I signed up for as a consultant and as agency owner. But the most interesting part of being a consultant is this: I don't know: - who will be my next client? - what project will I get to work on? - who will I get to work with on that project? - will it be a 1 month gig or a multi-year deal? - will I travel to a new country to meet the team? You might say how is this "interesting". It sounds scary and uncertain. The best life skill consulting has taught me is to be: Flexible and adaptable. That's what makes it exciting and keeps me on my toes. My only goal is to build a good reputation and long lasting relationships. I tell all consultants on my team the same thing, since they are an extension of my company's image. ---- Thank you to the UMB student chapter of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) | @aapscomms for inviting me to speak at the virtual session focusing on “non-traditional careers” for PhDs in the pharmaceutical industry. My life would be different if it hadn't been for St. John's University offering me the only acceptance letter (out of ten schools I applied to) to come to US for the Masters of Pharmacy program in 2007.

Full disclosure, the first 15 mins of our lunch 🍴 were spent bemoaning 😭 the demise of our once proud football club, Manchester United❗ 🌟🚀 On that note, I'm pleased to introduce Philip Miller as the next professional on the #50lunches50leaders series 🌟🚀 Once we unpacked 🛅 those collective frustrations, it dawned on me that the start of the Red Devils slide, strangely coincided with Phil's own career going into overdrive & the fortunes of both parties have been going in different directions ↔ ever since!    Coming from a family of scientists ⚕, it was no surprise Phil found himself in a laboratory at GSK to start his career. The world 🌍 of molecular pharmacology/DMPK kept him engaged for 5 years (also gaining his Ph.D from the University of Leeds), but a desire to further challenge himself saw him enter the management consulting space. Jumping in the deep end, he entered Deallus as the 8th employee worldwide. Starting as a Research Consultant/Analyst, he exited 7 years later as Head of EMEA & LATAM. This conversion period of academia/science to commercial/business saw him experience dozens of projects with a huge range of 💊 pharma/biotech clients.   Astellas Pharma next secured his services & he remained in their EU business for the next 4 years. First in the UK 🇬🇧 as Senior Director, Corporate Strategy & Planning for EMEA & then Head of Sales & Marketing in Austria 🇦🇹. Clearly impressing the folks at HQ, the next step was bringing him & his family to Japan 🇯🇵 where he continued his work in Corporate & Portfolio Strategy, as Executive Director & then VP for a further 4 years. Wishing to remain in Japan 🌸, an expansion role opened at Novartis, where he has remained since mid 2023. As Head of Strategy & Growth, he oversees NPP, Launch Excellence, Business Development, Strategy & Governance & in this role, he encourages his team to focus on outcome over process. "If you're solving a complex problem 🤔, it's important to keep focussed on the outcome versus sticking with the original plan & unintentionally compromising on quality. It's about working through ambiguity, learning & adapting the process as you go, while keeping leaders close enough to the team & the subject matter to have a view 🔭 on whether initiatives are moving at the right pace & in the right direction.   It is in this environment where I've found teams produce their best work & can operate with confidence that the output is genuinely what matters rather than sticking to arbitrary deadlines.   The Japanese business environment can typically be quite process-minded & hierarchical. However, it's important to have the courage to say we don't know the answer yet & we don't know every step 👣 we will take. In my experience, this openness is usually appreciated, encourages constructive engagement & creates the best conditions for ⚡ success!" 5 years 1,825 days 43,800 hours 2,628,000 minutes 157,680,000 seconds What has made it all worthwhile and continue consulting for the Pharma and Biotech world has been the amazing, talented and wonderful people I have been fortunate enough to support and work with during this time. Has every single one of these seconds, minutes, hours or even days been filled with supporting my amazing clients? Not quite because family and friends time is also important. I can say that, all of the time I have been able to dedicate to them, whether on strategic or tactical challenges, launch planning and support, marketing and commercial needs and anything in between, I have done with a personalised approach. I have truly cared about each and every product; each and every client too. And of course, I have enjoyed it all. I am looking forward to the next 5 years at Holmfield Consulting Ltd. being as exciting, fun and rewarding as these first 5 have been and I can’t wait to work on many more exciting projects with you (and receive many more positive endorsements and feedback from more happy clients!). Came across an excellent white paper from Graeme Wilkinson, Head of Virtual R&D Medicines Discovery Catapult on the skills required for successful drug discovery and what it takes to access the right people externally in parallel with developing the abilities in internal team as a start-up and SMEs. And not just Drug Discovery Skills… but a variety of skills to plan for in the drug discovery process, from the purely scientific to the entrepreneurial along with skills which are highly transferable. In Summary "From an entrepreneur’s perspective, knowing what skills will be needed – and when – is crucial to progressing the project allowing the team to integrate their science with commercial know-how.
