Someone had to say it... 🤷♀️ Few things will test your ability to form long-term goals & maintain faith in your vision quite like starting a business. Despite being a firm believer in the importance of work-life balance, during my first 2 years of business, I - ⏲ Started early, ended late, & worked over 3/4 of weekends. ☕ Ran on "hope, caffeine, & a dream" - my slogan for those 2 years. 💸 Re-invested every penny, fearfully knowing that a single wrong move had the potential to put me out of business. But, after those 2 🌶spicy🌶 years, in year 3 I - 🚶♀️ Suddenly had more flexibility than I had ever known (hello, daily HGW). 📅 Was able to niche down to pursue work I found fulfilling. 🙌 Found clients who valued my work, enabling me to recoup my initial investment & make a living wage. To anyone considering starting a business, I am your biggest cheerleader. 📣 I think society would benefit greatly from an economy dominated by passion-driven entrepreneurs, like yourself. But, as you get started, understand that the rosy dream of entrepreneurship likely lies a few years away. My advice? 3️⃣ Have a 3-year plan before you get started. Know what you need to accomplish in those years to have the business you envision at the end of that time. From there, it's just scaling. 🗓 Be intentional about when you start your business. Start at a time during which you have some extra capacity & resilience. 😓 Eliminate outside noise and, instead, focus on what you can control - the effort & attitude you show up with every day. 🏆 Keep your eye on the prize, and on days where you really can't see it, keep talking and thinking as if it already exists. Before someone cancels me for telling you to "work hard" - I am not telling you to work hard. I am telling you to not fall for "successful" entrepreneurs telling you not to. If you want to achieve big things, you have to put in a big effort - and for the first 2 years of your business, and even your career that often means having NO balance. My 2024 theme is CLARITY. After nearly 5 years of entrepreneurship, I’m finally figuring out my personal brand and its strengths. This process has been an evolution of sorts, but a very important one nonetheless. Sadly, I see many people bouncing around from one thing to the next, always looking for “the next big thing.” And that’s why I’m determined to be crystal clear this year in… -My strengths, skills and what I’m good at -What gives me the most fulfillment -The perfect client to work with -How I can offer the most value to others -Why am I doing all of this anyways? My advice to you (if you’re willing to take it) would be to focus in and answer any of these same questions I’m asking myself in my business this year.
