Chasing Excellence: Rowing Towards Professional Growth We have a competition each year at Shrewsbury where houses row against each other and try and catch the boat in front. It's called Bumps. You try and 'bump' the boat in front, resulting in you moving up the order for the next race. Watching this years competition made me think of what a good metaphor this race is to capture the essence of career progression and the continuous pursuit of learning and improvement. The Boat Ahead: Your Benchmark The boat in front of you represents a benchmark—an ideal or role model in your field. It could be a colleague, mentor, or industry leader whose achievements inspire you. Observing this boat provides a clear target for your growth, not out of envy, but to measure your progress and motivate your development. The Race: A Continuous Journey Rowing towards the boat ahead isn’t about reaching a final destination but about continuous improvement. Each stroke requires effort, focus, and persistence. Professional growth mirrors this, demanding lifelong learning. Stopping means stagnation; continuous effort keeps you moving forward and if you’re right at the front you have to keep working hard to stay there. Overcoming Hurdles: The Challenges Along the Way In every race, there are obstacles—choppy waters, strong headwinds and boats that make mistakes that you have to navigate. These represent the challenges you face in your career, from mastering new skills to adapting to industry changes. Overcoming these hurdles enhances your capabilities and experience. The Finish Line: A Moving Target In professional development, there’s no fixed finish line. Today’s goal may evolve tomorrow. This ever-moving target keeps you engaged and ensures that your career remains vibrant and fulfilling. Conclusion: Embrace the race Every stroke forward is a victory, bringing you closer to your full potential and a rewarding, ever-evolving career. Keep your eyes on the boat ahead, and enjoy the journey of catching up.
The annual House Bumps competition is in full swing down at the river. It’s great to see so much support down at the Boathouse - good luck to all the rowers taking part in round one of the competition today.

As I stated in a previous post where Greg Norman won £70,000 for his victory at Trump Turnberry in The Open 1986 - The winners checks should return to a normal level so the The R&A can spend more globally promoting the game as they are charged to do - same goes for the United States Golf Association (USGA) & PGAs. It is not any way in their remit to pay pros generational wealth in a single check. I keep hearing the from the pros themselves that they are playing for legacy and trophies not money - The for profits (PGA TOUR, DP World Tour, Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA)) & others that self-fund (LIV Golf, Masters) may increase the purses as much as they like and sponsors will support - but the organizations that grow the game from grass roots support so that the leaderboards are full of flags from around the world should have the support of the professionals to cap the purses - The prestige of the Major shouldn't be contingent of the amount of the winners check. As Martin Slumbers bravely brought attention to the fact the escalation of purses on Golf's most important organizations is unsustainable. In addition, a reduction in the overall men's purse would, like tennis, hopefully allow equal men's and women's payouts in the majors hosted by those organizations as they support both. The Open is the greatest legacy major and doesn't need the largest purse to prove it. #growthegame Augusta National Golf Club #TheMasters PGA of America The PGA The Golf Business
The winner of The 152nd Open at Royal Troon will receive USD 3.1 million in prize money. The Champion Golfer of the Year will receive the highest amount in The Open’s history as it returns to the renowned Ayrshire links for the tenth time. The R&A announced that the total prize fund for The Open, played from 14-21 July 2024, will be USD 17 million, a USD 500,000 increase on 2023. Martin Slumbers, CEO of The R&A, said, “The R&A has a responsibility to strike a balance between maintaining The Open’s position in the global game, providing the funds required for governance and developing amateur and recreational golf in 146 countries internationally. “We have to make choices if we want to continue to build on the significant growth in participation that is essential for golf’s future. “We remain concerned about the impact substantial increases in men’s professional prize money are having on the perception of the sport and its long-term financial sustainability. We are determined to act with the interests of the global game in mind as we pursue our goal of ensuring golf continues to thrive in 50 years’ time.”

Proud to be part of an industry that generates jobs, commerce, economic development and tax revenues to communities across the nation. Proud to champion an industry that promotes a physical, active lifestyle and positive mental health. According to the American Golf Industry Coalition's latest Golf Impact Report, golf impacts nearly two million Americans whose livelihoods directly or indirectly depend on it. The total economic impact of golf in America is estimated at $102 billion, serving 45 million golfers (11% of the U.S. population) and impacts 1.65 million jobs across the country. We spent last week at our Nation's Capital telling this story to congressional leaders and policy-makers as part of the 16th Annual National Golf Day. If you're not an active member of the National Golf Course Owners Association (NGCOA) you're not seeing the full picture. NGCOA Members are among the most thoughtful and successful golf course owners and operators in the business. Join us, it just makes sense. https://lnkd.in/gC4EDyqX

At face value, this video might look like a passionate football manager reflecting on a game, questioning decisions made by match officials (referees, VAR etc). But, look a bit deeper - it is about the divide that exists between the East and West. It's that feeling of being an outsider because of where you live. People have a preconceived idea of who you are based on where you are from. And then there is the feeling of disenfranchisement, the reality is we don't have the same access to things as other areas do. Growing up in South West Sydney, I understand this feeling well. Whenever I'd go to a public speaking competition held at private schools in Sydney's east. When I went to Sydney University. Even at some of my previous jobs. The A-Leagues have an opportunity to shine a spotlight on all the beauty the west has to offer. As Marko Rudan articulated, our community is culturally diverse, passionate, ambitious - we add so much value to the country as a whole. Football can unite the community and can be the platform to exhibit the best of our community too. 👉 This means the way we talk about our communities in the media, how we call out language that is harmful, the standards we hold everyone too (no double standards) and make sure we have different perspectives at decision making tables. Macarthur FC and Western Sydney Wanderers are a beacon of hope for football loving kids in the west but also too an example of the kind of quality you can expect to find in our growing suburbs. (P.S. GO THE BULLS!!) https://lnkd.in/g3Rdss-h
