🌍 An important milestone for #CityExperimentFund project.   👉 Representatives from the Municipality of Pristina and the Municipality of Prizren actively participated in the regional forum "Catalyzing Urban Transformation" organized by UNDP in Europe and Central Asia in collaboration with the Ministerstvo financií Slovenskej republiky.   🏙️ Participants from Kosovo shared insights and success stories, highlighting UNDP's commitment to supporting the development of liveable Pristina and vibrant Prizren. Achievements that were made possible through innovative strategies and interventions developed via co-design processes.   🤝 A notable fireside chat between Deputy Mayor Alban Zogaj (Municipality of Pristina) and Lejla Sadiku, the Team Leader of the IRH Innovation Team, discussed the importance of collaborative spaces for testing experimental processes and innovative financing options. Zogaj emphasized that lessons learned from small interventions are crucial for integrating into large-scale urban transformation projects urgently needed in Pristina, especially in areas like mobility.   🌿 Xhezide Vlashi, Landscape Architect in the Department of Public Spaces and Parks, shared inspiring success stories of small interventions as part of the #UrbanTransformationInitiative. This initiative, a co-financing agreement between UNDP Kosovo and the municipality, focuses on urban rehabilitation in Pristina for a sustainable future. It builds upon the City Experiment Fund project's co-created portfolio.   👩 Arlinda Rushaj Sadiku, Technical Lead for the City Experiment Fund in UNDP Kosovo, delivered a dynamic and interactive presentation on utilizing #generativeAi in urban transformation processes, sharing insights and success stories. She emphasized the advancement of urban and system transformation through #inclusivity and #innovation, exploring the technology's challenges and opportunities.   🔝 This forum in Bratislava, Slovakia showcased progress and lessons learned from the five cities involved in the #CityExperimentFund: Skopje, Pljevlja, Pristina, Almaty, and Stepanavan. 🌍 Meet Caroline Mwebaze, a Senior Hydrologist from the Ministry of Water and Environment in Uganda, currently enrolled in our programme ‘New Welfare Services – Sustainable Service Design as a driver for Regional Development: The Great Lakes region’. "Uganda's water resources are crucial for livelihoods, and managing transboundary waters is complex. The programme's focus on enhancing regional development caught my attention, aligning with my goal to contribute to community livelihoods through sustainable resource management." How she sees the future: “The pressure on the Great Lakes region’s water and related resources still remains a big challenge. The frequent recurrence of extreme weather events (floods and droughts) and increasingly erratic rainfall are a big challenge to the management of the region’s water resources. This notwithstanding, platforms like this provided by Lund University and the Swedish Institute, go a long way to tackle the challenge. Together with everybody on the hydrological path, I envisage improved community livelihoods and enhanced resilience to climate change impacts through shared benefits from services and products made available by sustainable management of our water resources”. To ensure future sustainability, 🌆 cities need to consider concepts of livability and resident well-being alongside; 🪴 environmental, 💸 economic and 🛣️ infrastructure development equity. This paper contributes to filling this knowledge gap through a novel interdisciplinary mixed methods study undertaken in two rapidly changing cities in Thailand and Kenya using qualitative surveys, subjective well-being and stress measurements, and spatial analysis of urban infrastructure distribution. Circular economy (CE) has attracted a lot of attention due to its potential to contribute to sustainable development. In their publication "Exploring Circular Economy Awareness, Perceptions and Practices in Selected Urban Slums in Kigali City of Rwanda", Vanessa Robertson (Miller) (Hochschule Neu-Ulm), Eucabeth Majiwa (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) and Nathan Kanuma Taremwa (University of Rwanda) analyse the circular economy in slums in Rwanda, addressing questions such as 🔹 What is the level of CE awareness and which perceptions prevail in Kigali’s slums? 🔹 What are the key CE-related practices in Kigali’s slums?   The chapter includes several interviews and focus group discussions with stakeholders in the slums of Kigali’s districts Kicukiro, Gasabo, and Nyarugenge. The insightful and highly relevant results can be found in the book "Urban Slums and Circular Economy Synergies in the Global South. Theoretical and Policy Imperatives for Sustainable Communities", which is linked in the comments.
