In my work facilitating Grand Challenges, I've seen firsthand the transformative power of well-crafted events to drive progress and inspire action. I’ve developed the concept of Touchstone Events to tap into the deep social bonding and synergy that emerge when individuals come together, preferably in person, to share space and ideas. I've distilled my experiences in street theater, storytelling, and community building into unique event designs that launch and sustain Grand Challenge initiatives, such as Design Studios and Summits, each tailored to foster united action against significant issues. One powerful example is the Diversity Summit organized by the Center for Financial Planning, Inc.® (CFP). It illustrated how addressing real-time concerns and embracing the complexity of raised issues can turn potential resistance into meaningful engagement and support, making the summit much more than just a memorable occasion. Touchstone Events are not about transient enjoyment; they are about creating lasting, life-affirming milestones that bring about real transformation and enduring change in participants. I’ll be sharing more about the structure and creation of Touchstone Events that unlock collective potential for systemic change in my next article. I'm still buzzing after moderating a panel discussion on sustainable and inclusive events with some amazing and influential event professionals. These are people to know, watch and work with ✨ A few takeaways from our panelists: Keep asking questions and be a "door opener"; not all vendors are as far along in their sustainability journey, and investment and opportunity can expand their access. Event planners are connectors, not only amongst an audience and client/business in the event experience, but within the ecosystem of vendors, especially when advocating for and practicing more sustainable and inclusive approaches. We can't know it all, but we can take steps to do better within our own sustainable and inclusion planning. Check out Universal Design Principles! Be transparent, communicate clearly and often, don't rush relationship building, and give yourself time to create consistent practices. Understanding your event's sustainable impact starts from the early stages of planning; considering the choices you're making regarding potential waste, inclusive menu offerings, and capabilities of your vendor to name a few.
