Vice President Engineering - Major Projects @ Candu Energy Inc. a member of AtkinsRéalis | Energy Sector Expertise
Had the opportunity to attend on behalf of AtkinsRéalis and Candu Energy Inc. There were so many great students that attended and wish I could have spent more time with them individually. The engineering field has a bright future! A few asked some great questions on how to make themselves stand out in the application process. I thought it would be great to share the 2 things I look for when reviewing resumes and interviewing candidates, especially those at the start of their careers. 1. We aren't hiring you for what you've done; we are hiring you for your potential. I look for areas that demonstrate your eagerness to learn and grow. Tough problem you faced? What did you do to solve it and what did you learn from it? Wanting to have a deeper understanding of why tells me you have potential to develop and grow in your career. 2. You may have worked independently at school, but in industry, you very rarely work by yourself. Highlight where you have collaborated in teams. That group project or committee you sit on - I'm interested in that! Finally, looking for a career is a full-time commitment. Spend the time tailoring your resume to the role, research the company, prepare for the interview and have your elevator pitch ready and you'll land that role.
On Wednesday, January 24th, the Career, Co-op & Student Success Centre at Toronto Metropolitan University (CC&SS) hosted our annual STEM Career Fair, and it was a huge success! We saw over 1,400 TMU students and new graduates from multiple programs and faculties participating in the event. They engaged and interacted with 51 employer partners and their representatives on employment opportunities, a wide range of career development topics, including alternative career paths. The day started with an Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Networking Breakfast to support our equity-deserving early talent with first-hand access to employer representatives. The success experienced could not have been achieved without the support of some key stakeholders. A special thank you to our 5 sponsors and their representatives - Platinum - Luanda Campbell, Paul Arevalo, Enbridge, Banafsha A., Giovanna Naranjo, SOTI, EDI Networking Breakfast - Sofia H., Jesse Reynolds, P. GSC, Chandos Construction, Photo Booth -Monica Sebastianski, MBA, De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited, Elevator Pitch - Marilyn Melnick, Nina Woock, CHRL, Turner Fleischer Architects Inc. and their amazing teams for coming on board. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our remaining 46 employers and their participating representatives (too numerous to name individually - refer to slides) for having great conversations, sharing employment opportunities with our early talent, and supporting them on the next stage of their career journeys! We also had Miljana Horvat, Roel Reyes, Ketan M. from our TMU FEAS Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies team on board this year promoting the diverse graduate programs to our early talent. A big shout out to the Employer Engagement team and Planning Committee: Mark Whitten (he/him), Justine Campbell, MSW, Andrew Ranjan, Bhavna Kher, Danny Eid, Chiddhanya Alagesan, Francesca Ricci, Safiya Nurmohamed, MEd,Chau-Anne Nguyen, Caroline Smolko, Samiha Ali, her Marketing & Communications team, and all CC&SS staff who contributed to the event’s success. We could not have done it without your individual and collective support. Thank you to everyone who participated in this year's event, and we look forward to continued success in the future! #careerfair #careers #STEM #employmentopportunities #students #newgrads #employers #networking #elevatorpitch #interviewing #resumetips #employerengagement #earlytalent
