Thank you so much to the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change for the fascinating, thought-provoking and inspiring day at the #FutureofBritain conference today. The energy for innovation, growth and getting things done was palpable, and the balance of optimism and realism was nuanced but overwhelmingly positive. I have paraphrased just a few of the key messages that I took away from today: AI is here - affect it, or be affected by it - Demis Hassibis, CEO Deepmind Be bold, and be imaginative - Tony Blair Preventative healthcare can deliver quicker wins than have ever been anticipated, we can impact outcomes within years not decades - Professor Andrew Scott Find space for the long term strategic thinking, regardless of the demands of day-to-day fire fighting - Wes Streeting, Secretary of State for Health The recent exponential growth to Denmark’s GDP has been through a single company, through a single drug, through a single team. We have the same opportunities here in Britain, we need to foster an environment where we make that possible - Lord William Hague Before you start a sentence with ‘I think’… make sure you did - US General Stan McChrystal The time for delivery is now, and the days of campaigning in poetry and governing in prose are behind us. Honesty, transparency and delivery are the currency of today - Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, Pat McFadden What an exceptional collection of thinkers, leaders, experts and futurists (to borrow the term from will.i.am in his session on AI in creative industries), there were far too many highlights to write down in a single post. And, personally, having the opportunity to meet and briefly discuss national health data policy direction and Arcturis key role in the delivery of those UK priorities with Tony was an absolute privilege.

You are more than a body. You are more than a mind. You are more than a lifetime. And you are all these. You are of the nature of light. The process of science has not taken us there yet, but eventually it will, once our assumptions fade, mind clears, and perceptions sharpen. Then the world looks different. Just sharing about our (i.e., Daniel E. Rivera Pedja Klasnja Junghwan Park Mohamed El Mistiri, PhD Meelim Kim Sarasij Banerjee Rachael T. Khan et al) recently completed R01 funded by the National Library of Medicine (NLM). In brief, we focused on doing methods work to build personalized just-in-time adaptive interventions to help increase physical activity. To do this, we both honored that people are different, context matters, and things are changing and developed an approach to find these predictable patterns for each person. With this, we could discover the just-in-time states/teachable moments when people would need support, have the opportunity to act favorably, and would actually want to receive support from the digital tool. Thrilled to share this video about our recently concluded National Library of Medicine (NLM) funded R01 study, "Just Walk Just-in-Time Adaptive Intervention (JITAI)". This interdisciplinary research delves into the emerging concept of just-in-time (JIT) states in behavior change interventions, showcasing the potential of system identification methods in personalized medicine. In behavioral medicine, JIT states represent teachable moments when people would respond favorably to the delivery of support, which is essential for personalized just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAIs). Our work illustrates that concepts from process systems engineering, system identification, data science, and control are effective in exploring, understanding, and operationalizing such advanced dynamic phenomena to personalize healthcare solutions (as presented in my dissertation https://lnkd.in/gaXKpFmU). This research paves the way for novel uses of predictive control to optimize multi-timescale decision-making in the delivery of both day-to-day goals and within-day notifications in JITAIs. 🚀 Capturing Impact: Recent Workshops and Key Takeaways Over the past year, my colleague Tom Boogerd and Louise Knight have been deeply engaged in discussions about how to showcase the impact we produce at the BMS Faculty, Universiteit Twente. This year, we've successfully launched a series of Impact Case workshops, co-organised with my colleague Tom. These sessions aim to encapsulate the impact of various projects, examining their effects and identifying the communities or stakeholders that benefit from such impact. Two key takeaways from our recent discussions: 💡 Tailored Impact: The reach and significance of your project's impact can vary, and it's not about competing to maximise both. It's essential that the impact aligns with your project's goals. For example, in healthcare, specialised care for 3 patients can be as impactful as a broader intervention for 300 patients. 💡 Shared Journey: You can't control everything. Impact develops over time and in collaboration with stakeholders. While you can manage your work and engage proactively with stakeholders, the ultimate uptake of your work lies beyond your direct control. Stay tuned for more!
