Lean thinking challenges our human instincts of jumping to solutions/ conclusions. It causes us resistance and challenges us however, it is the way to help us use our time and energy on the right things to and facilitate learning and incremental improvement. In this case PDCA thinking is the engine room of improvement . The key is to find the sweet spot - don’t spend too much time thinking and planning and don’t just jump In the deep end shooting from the hip! Getting the planning phase right though is half the battle - all too often we skip this phase entirely and move to doing based on assumptions and jumping to conclusions rather than taking some time to consider what the problem is, why it is a problem and how we can/should tackle it! Some key steps around the planning phase: 🟢 Understand and ask questions around what problem is being solved and why it is a problem 🟢 Define the current state using observation, facts and hard data, know where the baseline or starting point is 🟢 Understand the objective - What are we trying to achieve? by how much? by when? Is it to return to standard or solve a particular problem? Is it to make a specific improvement? 🟢 Consider the potential known challenges and obstacles that we are likely to encounter. 🟢 Define the measures of success - how will we track and visualise the effectiveness of our actions. What are the feedback mechanism LSW and how will the information be captured - and by who? Our human nature tends to favor reductionism because simplification provides a false sense of control. However, instead of seeking control, in most cases, we need to learn to dance with the system. On the other hand, in our already complex world, using complicated models and frameworks does not make things easier 🙂 This is especially crucial in change management, as people involved in change initiatives already have their primary work and numerous existing processes.
