CAF to build redesigned narrow-gauge trains for Renfe According to the Spanish Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility Oscar Puente, the manufacturer will start assembling the first ten trains at the Gipuzkoa plant on 26 February. The vehicles are due to enter service in 2026, two years later than planned. The national operator Renfe ordered 31 trains, in 2020 at a cost of €258 mln, and later exercised options for a further 25 vehicles. At the beginning of 2023, CAF (Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarriles) paused the contract because of incorrect data in the specifications, which did not allow trains to pass through some tunnels (see https://lnkd.in/e_YJ_7GP for details of the case). Several officials at both Renfe and ADIF, the infrastructure operator, resigned over the situation. According to the publication in El Espanol, the incorrect data was due to Renfe’s misinterpretation of the declaration on the network prepared by Adif. The trains were redesigned by using the existing trains as a reference. Rendering: MITMA #rollingstock #rail #railway #mobility

Following my previous post, a few weeks ago, I presented my research at the IASDR conference in Milan. I discussed the implications of sustainability, including its impact on legislation and regulations, such as the EU's efforts to promote train travel for medium distances. Additionally, I explored the impact of digitalization on travelers, specifically how it has led to an increased desire for a more prominent role in their journeys. However, there's still much room for improvement within our current mobility system. Unfortunately, I also experienced this myself during my trip to Milan. I had planned to travel by train and booked my journey several months in advance. However, a few weeks before my departure, part of the trip was canceled due to rocks on the rails in France. Since I had booked my trip with two different rail carriers, it wasn't clear whether I would receive a refund for all the parts of my journey. I spent two full days searching for an alternative journey and eventually concluded that the time and money it would require were simply too much. So, I ended up purchasing a plane ticket. It was disappointing because I had really wanted to travel by train! And this was just the booking process. I wondered what would have happened if my trip had been canceled while I was already traveling. Would I have received a new ticket or been accommodated in a hotel when necessary, with another trip scheduled for the next day? I had my doubts, unlike when flying, where such arrangements would have been made, depending on the airline, of course. We must address these kinds of barriers, especially when it comes to services during transfers, to place the traveler at the center of a more sustainable multimodal journey. Achieving this goal requires changes at multiple levels, involving different parties. Because if we maintain the status quo, nothing will change. Are you interested in this topic? I'll be presenting my work in an online session during the "Week of International Rail" next week, and you can still register for it: https://lnkd.in/eJyYNYP2 And you can read my paper here: https://lnkd.in/exwe-N2A Jasper van Kuijk Klaas Boersma Sicco Santema

🚌 Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) is the leading public transport operator in Barcelona. TMB is the commercial brand and management unit under which three municipal public transport companies operate in the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area. It includes the Ferrocarril Metropolità de Barcelona, SA, and Transports de Barcelona, SA, which manage the Metro and Bus network on behalf of the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. It also includes the companies Projectes i Serveis de Mobilitat, SA, which manages the Montjuïc cable car 🚡 ; Transports Metropolitans 🚇 de Barcelona, SL, which manages fare products through the 📲 Hola Barcelona e-commerce platform and other transport services, as well as the TMB Foundation, which looks after TMB's historical heritage and promotes the values of public transport through social and cultural activities. Since its creation in 1924, it has continuously increased its fleet of vehicles, lines and covered area, and it currently manages 183 city trains 🚆 and 1,135 buses 🚌 covering a network of 125.4 km and 839.21 km respectively. TMB actively participates in innovation projects. It always allies itself with the most modern and advanced technology, which allows it to improve services and accessibility and reduce polluting emissions on a daily basis. TMB will be the final user of the biomethane produced in Case Study 1 of the SEMPRE-BIO PROJECT. In CS-I, Cetaqua - Water Technology Centre aims to build and operate a small-scale bio-methanation biogas-to-biomethane plant, using an innovative combination of bio-methanation and proton exchange membrane water electrolysis with PROPULS, DTU - Technical University of Denmark and SINTEF. The #biomethane will be subsequently compressed up to 300 bara for storage in cylinder racks and will fuel 2 TMB buses daily to cover their entire daily CNG needs. Tests for emissions will be conducted at month 1, 6 and end of operation to compare with normal emissions and the impact on its components will be studied too. #Transport #sustainability

Experienced International Project Manager, Passionate about Sustainable Mobility - EUR ING MBCS CEng CITP
On 6 December 2023 King Felipe of Spain and the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, presided over the inaugural journey of the Pajares railway variant of the High Speed Rail line between León and the Asturias. The Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, and the presidents of Castilla y León and Asturias, Alfonso Fernández Mañueco and Adrián Barbón respectively, also participated in the event. The variant will commence passenger service already tomorrow. The new schedules that will come into operation represent a saving of just over an hour compared to those that existed to date. Thus, the fastest journey between Gijón and Madrid will last three hours and 47 minutes; the fastest between Oviedo and Madrid will last three hours and 19 minutes. The variant was inaugurated almost twenty years after its first stone was laid, after many controversies, political discussions and technical problems. Construction has been a great challenge with up to 5,000 professionals and five tunnel boring machines working at the same time on the construction of the Pajares twin-tube tunnel. The line has three other twin-tube tunnels: Pontones, Sotiello and Teso. In addition, it has ten viaducts. Four of these viaducts are double, and one is triple (three tracks, one on each viaduct): Campomanes, the only one in the entire Spanish railway network. The infrastructure is an electrified double track, with ERTMS level 2 signalling, prepared to allow a maximum speed of 275 kph. #spain #españa #highspeedrail #hsr #construction #publictransport #planning #green #mobility https://lnkd.in/dv5UckxQ
