I'm proud of our recently published clinical research article "Osteoporotic bone fracture risk assessment in Latvian patients with newly diagnosed sarcoidosis" in the official journal of the WASOG (World Association for Sarcoidosis and Other Granulomatous Disorders). It has been a long and challenging road with interruptions while collecting and summarising data for both patient groups as well as shaping the article through the publishing process. This was the first ever study investigating osteoporotic fracture risk in patients with newly diagnosed sarcoidosis (at the time of diagnosis), all available studies are conducted with patients with established and treated disease. Some findings were rather unexpected but they can be explained and are in line with several previous studies. A full text free article pdf is available at the end of the link below references or through the cover page link here - https://lnkd.in/dTM6mhwW My particular gratitude goes to my co-authors Dr. Zane Lucāne, Dr. Marta Persaņa, Dr. Elīna Vanaga, Dr. Zane Vitenberga-Verza and Prof. Ilze Štrumfa for all the effort and support. 🥳 European Hormone Day is here! ESE, the ESE Foundation and the endocrine community across Europe are joining forces today to raise awareness of the vital role of hormones in preventing + treating disease. Hormones play a major role in many prevalent chronic diseases (such as cancer, diabetes and thyroid disease), and over 400 rare diseases. These affect millions of people in Europe. While we need policymakers to lay the groundwork for better prevention, diagnosis and treatment, there are steps we can all take to improve our hormone health. That’s our focus today. Yesterday I had the pleasure to moderate the seventh iteration of the WHO Decoding #Data and #DigitalHealth webinar series. We focused on the #reimbursement and #valuation of digital health technologies. The adoption of digital health within #healthsystems is complex. Robust reimbursement mechanisms are quintessential, facilitating access to new digital health technologies. A recent study from the The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and WHO Regional Office for Europe concluded that countries show divergent approaches to digital health reimbursement. #Valuebased reimbursing digital health technologies is largely non-existent. We looked to disentangle some of these prominent issues to arrive at action points for advancing digital health reimbursement. Some key takeaways from the webinar: 1️⃣ We are at the precipice of a paradigm shift. Digital health does not adhere to the rules of pharmacological interventions and should therefore not be measured with those same metrics. A need for dedicated valuation tools and willingness-to-pay thresholds for digital health technologies was made abundantly clear. 2️⃣ The value of digital health goes beyond clinical outcomes. There is a dire need to understand what dimensions and metrics beyond strictly clinical outcomes can be proactively and positively influenced by digital health technologies, pointing towards the social determinants of health. 3️⃣ Harmonisation efforts for health technology assessments are in progress, but at the same time direly needed. A common standard for health technology assessments for digital health technologies can eliminate a large degree of uncertainty in terms of what evidence standards need to be met in order to access the European healthcare market. 4️⃣ With over 300,000 health apps being freely available on various app stores, it becomes impossible for citizens, patients, health professionals, or decision-makers to distinguish the good from the bad without clear quality labels. A standardised quality label for health apps is on the horizon, after which the endeavour to start testing and appraising both novel and existing health apps can commence. I would like to thank the panelists Petra Hoogendoorn, Fruzsina Mezei, Louisa Stüwe, Steven Vandeput, PhD., and Kyle Longton, CAE, REBC for their vibrant discussion and insights. I would also like to thank Ryan Dos Santos and Dr Stefan Buttigieg MD MSPH MSc for their support leading up to and during the webinar. 📖 Read more about current digital health reimbursement strategies in Europe: https://lnkd.in/eYmFYjby 📖 Read more about what it takes to implement digital therapeutics in health systems: https://lnkd.in/e_-fmKgz 📖 Read more on the state of digital health in the European region: https://lnkd.in/e9tsFN7G

A truly exceptional mind is gone. R.I.P. Daniel Kahneman (1934-2024). His distinguished collaboration with Amos Tversky on decision making inspired Richard Thaler to shape the theory of "behavioural economics" - a truly captivating topic! Another brilliant concept is Daniel Kahneman's happiness theory that was introduced in his "Thinking, Fast and Slow". As explained here (https://lnkd.in/dAbWm3qV), it is the idea that we have two selves, the experiencing self and the remembering self, and that the remembering self influences our overall happiness more than the experiencing self. "Experienced happiness refers to your feelings, to how happy you are as you live your life. In contrast, the satisfaction of the remembering self refers to your feelings when you think about your life. Nothing in life is quite as important as you think it is while you're thinking about it." (D. Kahneman) A holiday snapshot was captured a few years ago in Montenegro reading the Latvian translation of Kahneman's "Thinking, Fast and Slow". #exceptionalmind #ThinkingFastAndSlow #behaviouraleconomics #decisionmaking #happiness #experiences #memories

Keeping fingers crossed for transparent and smooth continuous implementation of strategic growth plans in our Riga East Clinical University Hospital (Rīgas Austrumu klīniskā universitātes slimnīca). Good luck in finding compromises for various challenges but, most importantly, reshaping our hospital into a place providing both the best possible care for our patients and becoming a supportive and amiable working environment. The interview with our hospital CEO Normunds Stanevics is in Latvian but it's a good insight. #patientcentricity #bettercare #greatplacetowork #innovation #RigaEastClinicalUniversityHospital
