Today's metadata-related action will take more than 10 minutes. The International Federation of Reproduction Rights Organisations (IFRRO) is hosting a webinar with the title "The Role of Identifiers in RRO Operations." What is interesting here is that there will be a presentation on cooperation between Finnish CMOs and the Finnish National Library. To my knowledge, the interoperability between entities in books is really ahead of the game compared to music and other types of rights facilitation. https://lnkd.in/grr2U6Zv It would be fun to have a map of where actual exchange between entities on a national and international level happens. I know that in music, there are RDx and MDx, which are run by IFPI, WIN & PPL and for MDx SoundExchange. But in the Nordics for books, we have Publizon, which has a full supply chain end-to-end, minimizing data and value loss in the value chain. Why isn't there something like that for other types of content? And with books (again, to my knowledge), there is still the issue of metadata capture when the book enters the supply chain.

Once again, the Wikimedia Foundation's application for observer status at WIPO, the United Nations agency for intellectual property, was blocked by China. This is the fourth time that China opposed our request, based, once again, on false accusations that the Foundation is complicit in spreading disinformation. This misrepresents Wikipedia's volunteer-driven model. The free encyclopedia's policies and practices are rooted in accuracy and neutrality; they help effectively counter misinformation and disinformation online. Observer status would enable us to participate and contribute to WIPO committees where intellectual property norms are set. As the host of the world’s largest online encyclopedia, the Wikimedia Foundation has practical expertise in many of the issues of interest being discussed at WIPO, including traditional knowledge, copyright, access to knowledge during times of crises, and Artificial Intelligence. The Foundation's presence at WIPO would help to ensure that the future of copyright truly reflects the global and diverse needs of the internet. We hope that WIPO leadership will act to help advance global access to free knowledge by enabling our observer status application to move forward in the near future. CISAC has published its 2024 Annual Report, giving a comprehensive overview of its work programme on behalf of collective management organisations and the millions of creators they represent worldwide. 🤝 Highlights of the Annual Report include: - The successful takeover by CISAC of the CIS-Net tools that underpin inter-society data exchanges. CISAC now has control over the running of the systems, enabling it to be adapted to meet societies’ changing business needs. - Continuing to increase adoption of the ISWC. Already provided to CMOs and publishers, new services are now being delivered to DSPs and data service providers, with allocation via labels also being developed. - Setting the legal framework for creators in the AI environment. CISAC’s actions on AI have evolved rapidly, from advocacy to heads of state and ministers to legislative submissions in several jurisdictions. - Working for growth and strong copyright frameworks at national level. The Report highlights CISAC engagement with China on copyright and market growth. It also shows examples of successful campaigns from territories including South Africa, Bulgaria, Chile, Georgia, Korea, New Zealand and others. - Relations with international agencies. With its global footprint, CISAC has a unique engagement with centres of international influence such as WIPO, UNESCO and regional agencies. The Report highlights several key interventions by its President and Vice-Presidents to promote and safeguard creators’ rights. - International campaigns. The Report also outlines CISAC’s continued lobbying across all repertoires it represents. WHAT DO YOU WANT TO SHARE? As the Open Science Policy of the European commission is being implemented throughout Europe as a new paradigm for research, artists working in educational institutions are being confronted with needs for data management plans and expectations to share their research data in a FAIR way. But what is openness in artistic research? What can it be? What tools and concepts do we need to navigate and in this jungle while balancing needs for opacity as well as transparency? Join me and my colleagues in ELIA in a series of open online conversations where we aim at exploring such questions while aiming Towards a manifesto for Critical Openness in Artistic Research. Together we will explore the disciplinary ticks and nervous points emerging around the regulatory practices of Open Research and how they do or do not adequately support the diversity of practices in the field of artistic research. Through these discussions we aim to formulate a set of value-based positions and principles by reflecting on the historical precedents of copyright (and copyleft) in art and science, the acceleration of open ideologies in digital culture and the practical implication of these developments for artistic research and its distribution. The discussion series will be run through the ELIA Platform for Artistic Research over 3 x 1-hour online sessions. While the sessions will be informal and discussion based, they will also reflect on the tensions between artistic research and open science to arrive at creative and critical perspectives. This conversation will be continued at the ELIA Artistic Research platform event at the ELIA Biennial 2024*, Milan.
